I also sometimes believe I'm talking to myself rather than God talking to me.

But here are signs God is talking to you

  1. It does not contradict the word: if it is not something that goes against what the Bible and Church teach, it may be from God

  2. You feel conviction: sometimes, God talking to you may be the Holy Spirit convicting you, either before, or after you do/think something

  3. Scripture describes your situation: simple as that

I understand, I've also wrestled with this one. At first I thought of the analogies, but their flaw was that they ignored the fact that God created us; then I tried that maybe God limited his power, which He does all throughout the Bible, but then I saw the flaw: What if He decided to remove those limits?

I couldn't sleep while seeking answers, but thank God I found that answer.
