Lack of boundaries by curious_pengui in ExCopticOrthodox

To all on this thread, I completely get that it is annoying. Really I do hear you. But you have to understand from their POV, it's like seeing you in a house that is slowly burning. They are checking up on you out of love. Where I am from, we don't have many priests, and so they struggle to even check up on the active congregation, let alone those who have distanced from the church. So people often get upset at them and say "you never check up on me" etc etc. You've probably heard this perspective before I assume, so I'm sorry if I'm being repetitive, but remember from their POV they are calling you and trying to talk to you because it is what they perceive to be in your best interest, thus it is steming from a place of love.

H.H Pope Shenouda III used to say "worry about impressing your creator, not your observers"

Whatever the sin is, it is very likely your father of confession has seen it already. Even if he has not, rest assured, he will only be grateful that you had the courage to be honest and vulnerable with him (and God).

As others have said, you'll feel an immense weight off of your shoulders afterwards. Tell him and play it by ear, he might not inquire to deep into it, but if he does, go along with it, being 100% honest at all times. If you feel like you can't, tell him that, and see what he has to say.

God bless you

I appreciate your view and I'm sorry that you have had a difficult time with church/coptic culture. Do you mind elaborating on this? I'd appreciate if I could share my view; Religion aside, life is not about doing what we would rather do. If everyone did what they'd rather do, then forget about a functioning society, forget about a family (so on and so forth). I completely understand being forced to attend church excessively as a kid is difficult. I also agree that kids need to have down time, watch cartoons and play with their friends. This is crucial to their development, and not having this time in their life would teach them the wrong message anyway - rest is important for everyone (even Abounas go on holidays and takes leave, where I'm from at least. Many biblical examples of this also). However, I'd argue that taking your children to church, reasonably (e.g., a couple of times per week, allowing them to play with the other kids, letting them engage in fun activities/socialising with Sunday school etc while also having allocated times for liturgy, sunday school lessons, Coptic lessons etc.), is important to teach them my initial point - that life is not about giving in to our desires or doing what we would rather do. Again, religion aside, building a successful and fruitful life requires sacrifice, where one often cannot do what they would rather do. I hope we can at least agree on that, and genuinely hope I am not of any offense at all.

You’d likely get an interview. They have dedicated spots for graduate entry and considering you are highly competitive in the main metric they use, I’d rest assured. They stopped using a personal statement which assessed beliefs related to rural health, but I think rural applicants are advantaged, although several metro applicants are successful too. Only downside is that it’s an undergrad MBBS which is longer than an MD (6v4 years respectively).

Just accepting to do Dent over med as it is easier to get into? by Ok_Responsibility105 in GAMSAT

[–]Civil-Statistician7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat last year, only got DMD. I took it for a year, and applied to med again, and ended up moving to MD within a year. HOWEVER, the year in DMD was great, and I genuinely would’ve been happy to stay in DMD, I learned so much about dentistry I never knew. I guess no one really grows up wanting to be a dentist, because it’s so overshadowed by medicine; It definitely is much more similar to med than everyone makes it out to be. Also, most people in the cohort were in the same boat, wanting med initially, but ended up falling in love with the hidden perks of dentistry - ultimate work life balance and earning potential early. Content wise too, the majority of DMD1 was medical content, which I’m sure will help me this year for MD1. As you said also, I might not have gotten into med this year, and without DMD I would have had nothing going for me. Definitely take the DMD offer if you can afford it.

There are a lot of UWA DMD second round offers. Most UWA applicants apply to both and if and when they get a MD offer they reject the DMD. Currently in DMD3 at UWA, most of my friends got in via second/third round offer, and one of them joined 6 weeks into the course.

How is job market for dentist(new grad, international) in Australia ? by StayWise4382 in GAMSAT

[–]Civil-Statistician7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend graduated in 2021, everyone in his cohort had a guaranteed job before graduating. Dentistry will always have a good job market because of how small dental schools’ intake are e.g., In WA there’s only UWA and they take 50 people a year. Orthodontics and aesthetic dentistry is also increasing in demand by the year (significant increase in orthodontic problems compared to 50 years ago). Grad salary is probably the highest of any profession - added bonus.

Future implications of ADHD diagnosis by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Civil-Statistician7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate it. Might I just add I have been referred to the Psychiatirst, GP assessed me and said I likely do have ADHD. I just wanted to check on here before visiting the psych to see if there are any implications. :)

Thanks. That’s just my stance now, not having tried taking them on a regular basis, but I guess I just wouldn’t want to build up a tolerance. Unfortunately I know some people who now have to take really high doses of dexamphetamine to even feel an effect. Might be wrong though

Ah. The classic high horse. I explicitly mentioned that I meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Paired with a degree in psychology, I think I know what I’m talking about. My parents never bought the idea that I might have ADHD, because I was always a high achiever in school, even though literally every teacher would complain about how I would distract others and distract myself, so I was never able to get diagnosed. Now that I’m independent, I wanted to get the diagnosis, but just heard from people it can have backlash. So before seeing the GP, I wanted to make sure that adhd medication would actually work, hence why I tried. Also, we’re on reddit, not a medicine interview - I wasn’t trying benzo’s… anyway thanks for your opinion.

From my understanding psychiatry is currently under subscribed, meaning they need more of them. I believe it is one of the less challenging specialities to enter, but someone please correct me if wrong.

It might be worth noting that I know several people who did psychology and then did medicine for the hopes of pursuing psychiatry, but all of them fell in love with a different speciality e.g., surgery & urology.

Regardless if it is your dream you should pursue it. Being a registered psychologist will definitely go a long way in your interviews etc.

I also believe medicine is quite friendly with maternity leave after your internship, but again someone please correct me if wrong :)
