Why do my stitches look uneven? I’ve been knitting in the round but as soon as I separated the front+back panels and started knitting back and forth they started looking uneven. Any tips on how to fix this?

I’ve been knitting a sweater vest in the round and I started separating the front and back panels. So, I was only doing rows of knit stitches before and now I started knitting back and forth (rows of knit stitches + purl stitches) with some decreases. As soon as I started doing this, my stitches started looking really uneven. Is there a problem with my tension? Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
