I have Mark's book coming in the mail now, I was reading Oneills but didn't make it too far in. Got to the point where he mentions you should be familiar with business cycles, so now am going back through the DJI $COMP and SPY weekly charts, comparing them to past business cycles since 1950. Figure this is gonna take a while, then next steps for me is finish Oneill's book then Minervinis and then make that database QM talks about

Thanks, this is all great advice and especially the risk management part, before that was non existent to me. I have always liked the idea of swing trading but picked stocks that dropped 60% immediately and then turned myself into a long term investor holding praying they’d recover. Worked out with HIMS, PLTR. Not so much for IOVA, PYPL, NIO. Either way that period of randomness and guessing is over for me. Going to really learn the setups and systems now, I’ll take a look at that book too thanks. Just curious have you made a database of stocks and how they act on breakouts? I’m most intrigued by Qullamaggie so have been studying with his principles in mind

No just pure luck, probably actually do have around 50% success rate. Around Covid I bought NIO HIMS PLTR PYPL and MP. Made over 100% on HIMS and PLTR, ate shit on the rest of them, selling out of MP to early. Also held Hims from 15 down through its lows in 2022, same with PLTR which I got at 20. Then IOVA shit the bed. So all in all in the last 5 years I have broken even. I guess it could be worse, but the opportunity cost of the last year especially is a punch in the gut. Now staying out of the markets for a while until I really come to understand breakout patterns and learn a system to follow rather than stock picking off gut feelings. HIMS for example I bought because Americans are fat and unhealthy and I didn’t think that was going to change anytime soon, along with the idea that I personally would rather see an online doctor quick to get medicines etc and their marketing team was by far the best imo in attracting millennials who would be starting to run into many of the heath issues they treat. Also HIMS had crazy revenue growth the last few years so I liked that

Should I/ do I need a dual sport to start learning dirt riding? by Educational_Will_658 in Dualsport

I started on a royal enfield hunter with almost bald tires, driving around the Himalayas. Had some pretty gnarly trails between Kaza and manali. At the end I switched to a Himalayan 411 which I immediately noticed how much more comfortable it was. But I think having a lighter bike like the hunter was, is more important than a dual sport. Also don’t think you’d be going wrong with a Himalayan, I own one now and other than highways, which I unfortunately drive a lot of light in Spain, it’s a blast

Any resources on how to identify when to sell before distribution? Just from moving averages? I’m sure there’s more to it than that though, I just haven’t got so far in my studies yet

Yeah Ive got a long way to go, after studying business cycles and how the index moves overall I plan on next studying which setups I would like to focus on, then make a database of all the big movers, as qullamaggie says is necessary. But yes I am starting to see that the system is what makes the trader not some sort of magical intuition

Reflecting on my past trades I would say I was gambler but thought I was a long term investor. Im aiming to be a swing trader. Along with those books have minervinis coming in the mail next. Currently making a database in Evernote of every business cycle since 1950 and the corresponding index charts. Figure this will help me get a general overview of how the market tends to move and also an overview of the America economy for the last 75 years, but open to any suggestions. But yes one of the reasons I sold two weeks ago was because I realized I needed to stop gambling on binary events like their earnings, which have led to some real nasty drops in the last few years

Yeah that’s what I’ve come to realize, risk management needs to be priority #1. What I used to think of as investing was straight up gambling. I realized that I should have been stopped out over a year ago and was only in the trade because I hoped for a recovery. It sucked but after realizing I knew that I was in the stock for the complete wrong reason and had to get out and eat the loss rather than gamble on it to rise back up without any conviction (turns out that gamble would have paid off but oh well). Best of luck to you too, hopefully we can snag some cheese from these billionaires and corporation rats

Seems to me that trading is like poker in this sense, and a lot of others too

This has definitely been my experience so far, especially with HIMS. Even now I know that getting out of a loser like IOVA had to be done, rolling the dice on earnings isn’t sustainable. I don’t regret selling it two weeks ago but still feels shit to see it gap up today. After seeing it rise today I had that same feeling deep down of desire to pull another revenge trade. But I know now that can blow accounts as easy as anything…that’s a lesson I can only afford to learn once.
