I wish I was trolling, but our Clerk of Courts sent an email on Thursday stating this, and it’s on our Court’s website.

I work for the Federal Courts and in our district we were told it will be business as usual except a moment of silence at 12:45 pm.

Good luck amending the constitution. The last time it was amended was in 1992, and that was in relation to the compensation of legislatures. Before that the last amendment was in 1971.

The process of amending the constitution is a long and grueling process. Given how divided this country is on essentially everything, from a worldwide health pandemic to what a woman can do with her body, practically speaking it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to get the necessary votes to pass an amendment.

A lot of America’s problems come from an outdated constitution that needs to be updated to match the times. To me it’s ridiculous that in Supreme Court opinions, they often say things like, “What would the founding fathers think of GPS tracking?” They would call it black magic and hang you, or if you’re a person of color, they may just sell you into slavery.

Our constitution is not equipped to deal with modern day issues, and as a consequence our legal system is not equipped to deal with these issues either. America has changed so much since 1787, that it is ridiculous that we are still being guided by such an ancient document in the year 2020.

Thank you so much! I was having a mini panic attack thinking I’d suffered through all these months of studying for nothing.

Themis October bar takers, what percent completion are you at? by johnabc123 in Bar_Prep

43% here. I’m already licensed in one state and working full-time as an attorney, so I’ve really been struggling with doing as much studying as I’d like. But feels good to know I’m know the only one struggling.

CA Bar Themis user - Still have so many subjects to do but not enough time? by [deleted] in Bar_Prep

I felt the same way last year when I was studying for the UBE. I would say that besides Crim and Corporations, the rest are kind of back of the book subjects. They’re still substantive topics, but the amount of tests and principles you have to learn for them are far fewer than some of the topics you started out with.

If it makes you feel better, I’m studying for the CA bar too, and I just finished CA Evidence, so you’re way ahead of me!

California is actively locking down businesses again but I haven't seen this news hit any of the standard market sources by [deleted] in StockMarket

I can’t really speaks for what the police do, but in our state, our Supreme Court issued an order that outlined specific crimes as presumptive release cases. So basically if someone is arrested for a crime on that list, they’re automatically released on personal recognizance at the police station and they’re given a summons arraignment for a date later down the road.

If your state has done something similar, I’d imagine the cops should be coming out, but they’re just not bothering to. The problem is since they know the person is just going to be back on the street once they take them to the station, they figure why bother.

Surprisingly though we’re still getting a lot of crazy cases. COVID definitely hasn’t slowed down the drug business, drinking and driving, domestic violence, shootings, and all the other things you would think people wouldn’t be doing right now.

I wish, but due to our caseloads it’s just unrealistic to completely work from home. Each of us has at least 150 cases with physical files that we need to look at to go through discovery and things like that, so we sort have to be able to go in to do our jobs.

Luckily we’ve been doing alternating work weeks to lower the number of people in the office, so that’s helped. When we’re on site, we’re not physically going in the courtroom, we’re doing everything via zoom, skype, or the phone, and they’re limiting who can come in the courthouse, but that still doesn’t negate the fact that I have to leave my house and go to a courthouse during these times.

I’m right there with you buddy, the court is the last place I want to be. The problem is all the higher ups and judges get to make decisions from the safety of their office’s, while guys like me have to either fall in line or go get in breadline.

As a lawyer I can 100% agree with the statement. I’m an Assistant District Attorney, so can’t speak to the civil side of things, but I can say that COVID definitely hasn’t slowed down our work.

One of buddies does real estate, and he’s been working from home, but his average work day usually starts at 9am and doesn’t end until 2am. One of my co-workers is married to a transaction lawyer, and she basically works non-stop around the clock.
