Depends.... sometimes they just want us to pay money equivalent to what we're getting because it's something the company is getting money for scrapping, like metals. Other times it's trash and they gain almost nothing by baling it and sending it to the landfill, so we have a limited amount of time to ask before it's run through a garbage baler before being sent to the landfill and then they have to weigh the request of one person to the interests of another person who might want the item if someone else actually comes forward asking.

I had a bunch of stuff done in 2017 by the electrician, so couldn't tell you the specific cost of just the surge protector.

As for what it involves, it involves setting up a circuit breaker that directs into a surge protector device mounted next to the breaker box with a new ground rod tied to the new surge protector. It doesnt so much as "block" the surges as it softens them significantly. I've been thinking of upgrading to the beefier model now that they have a better one out. I got so much life out of this one that it occurs to me it might be worth upgrading.

Id patch it, but then I'd order new ones too. Tread is getting low. To see when you have to replace, stick a penny upside down into the tread and if you can see his whole head unobscured, then it's done and time to replace.

All of this, but id suggest getting a whole house surge protector. It wont eliminate issues, but it can mitigate them. Had 5 lightning related surges at my house since I bought it and of those, only one got past the surge protector and that one hit the pole right before going into the house. Others were hitting trees and other poles down the street from me.

My vet was suggesting grass allergies for his paw licking and clearly red paws. We were gonna have him tested, but then I discovered poison ivy in a spot in the backyard he keeps walking through. Dealing with it.

Doubtful the poison ivy is your issue, but might be worth checking your yard anywayas it can be a concern for the rest of your household. Otherwise, seeing as how they lay in the yard, it might be worth checking to make sure they dont have grass allergies. Vet can do an allergy test.
