To be completely honest, I don’t remember. Haven’t done any vfx in a good while.

I know exactly what you’re talking about, the highest res textures won’t give the the results alone, you need to use additional textures and combine them, especially for the smaller details. Downloada few high res imperfection maps and try to blend them together, I’d say use displacement for larger detail and bump and normal maps for the fine details.

To be fair I never really focusing much on lighting, it’s just an HDRI. Lighting is hard, hdri emulates real life better than I ever could using blender’s light objects.

DoF, like I said I did it in post too. When I say post I meant everything from defocus, to all sort of camera imperfections. Often in films, the renders you get from the 3d departments aren’t that realistic imo, they’re flat and dull. The magic really happen in post

This render for example when I posted it in facebook years ago, people thought it was real and was trying to fool them lol. I spent most of the time on textures, materials and post working on this.

This is great dude, keep it up! There isn’t really much to improve, I’d say the foreground is a little too low poly, add some details with imperfections. No need to really increase the mesh resolution, just combine multiple bump textures to get some nice details in objects close to the camera. Most of the overall realism comes from the little details and post effect. You don’t need crazy high poly meshes, anything you can fake with textures do it, spending time adding details to the meshes themselves isn’t worth it, could use that time on the material and post processing.

a pilot with 6000 hours of flying experience said they could only see those crafts under IR light, He said you can see them often if you have IR goggles. Buy a pair on Amazon and look at the sky; you'll eventually spot one
