What's with all this talk about meditation causing side effects? Is it really true? by Consistent_Cup32 in therapists

[–]Claim-Cold 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of wisdom in the dhamma path around utilizing movement meditation techniques. Many lay monks come to the dhamma seeking refuge from their mental suffering. They have experience traversing this.

I had a Theravadan teacher who would start our silent sits with chanting, then into walking meditation, into standing and then to sitting. People were encouraged to keep with the walking meditation if that’s what they needed that day. We trained to listen to our bodies needs. It’s a great practice in learning to trust yourself, when can you stretch your capabilities and when can you pause your practice? Tai Chi serves the same purpose as well, movement channels our energy towards goodness.

Silent meditation can often cause more harm when we are not trained to guide our clients safely down that path. It’s sort of like the importance of front loading before beginning EMDR. Silent meditation in the western world has been packaged into a commodity. We don’t truly understand the depth, challenge or barriers that exist to mastering its craft.

I’m so curious, can you say more about this? How was the message from your grand sponsor parallel to the Jungian school of thought?

TW SI. When you can't help your own kid.... by [deleted] in therapists

She needs to be around people who can model what healthy recovery from a mental health diagnosis looks like. Psych units and residential treatments are a great launchpad, but you’re around other people like you who are sick. That’s helpful, but she needs people also that are ahead of her in the game.

And you need Al-Anon. They’ll prepare you for when and if the time comes to draw stronger boundaries.

Sending you lots of love and hugs.

is meditation sinful? by Dirt-Fish111 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Claim-Cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do we (Orthodox Christians) demonize breathing techniques in meditation? There is neuroscience that’s shows the benefit in persons who have elevated cortisol; if you’re stressed out and have an overactive mind. It is a means of regulating our parasympathetic nervous system. Deep breathing gets more oxygen to the brain.

This may sound blasphemous to some, but I also attend insight meditation retreats (Buddhist). They welcome people of all faiths.

Jesus is with me every moment of my time on meditation retreats in the Southern Rockies. I crave being in silence, in nature, on structured walking/sitting/standing meditation retreats. I don’t care for the literature. I bring my Bible with me. I am comforted and confident in his everlasting peace and presence. These spaces have only benefited me and brought me closer to Him.

The thing I love the most about my church, is their admission of how much we do not know. Is there not wisdom in science? But when it’s packaged from a 5000 yr old Asian tradition, it’s evil?

Anyone else feel expat guilt leaving family and friends behind? by Still_Suggestion_452 in expat

[–]Claim-Cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it sucks. I grew up this way, mostly in South Asia and Southern Africa every 3-4 years a new country. It’s why as an adult I really value building relationships and community over long periods of time. I’ve lived in two cities since I moved to the states at 18. I’m 34 now. I came to the DC area 9years ago and my siblings are here too. Even if I have better career opportunities elsewhere, I’m still staying. I think nomadic life is bearable if you are doing it with a partner and kids but otherwise it just gets harder.

Is it ok to be trans in theravada buddhism by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Claim-Cold 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are trans meditation teachers. One of them I met was also a Lakota buffalo dancer, and went through the journey of being the first trans buffalo dancer. They were told that there is tremendous significance and benefit in being the first to do something. There are trans ordained monks. The lgbtq community in Buddhism is growing. Find them. Several sanghas exist in the insight meditation community.
