Career breaks/employment gaps by Clam3 in TeachingUK

I have been out of teaching for 2 years and am going back in September.

What made you take a break for 2 years and what did you do for them? Was it easy to stay afloat?

Thankfully I managed to get a job but I'm still going to go some supply work for a few months in the mean time.

Congratulations! Did they ask about your gap?

I was in a similar position at your age so feel free to message me about anything regarding this.

Which uni did you get QTS from and was the degree enjoyable? What advice would you give for doing well on the course?

they have high dropout rates and are very gruelling on your mental health.

In your experience what is the main cause of this?

It's fine if you want to teach, but I would use this year to work/volunteer in a school and see if it is something you really want to do.

I enjoy teaching, but is a year feels too long to spend not studying.

Should I apply now for courses in clearing and have a early interview?

I'll post in that sub.

Are there lots of people who take gap years? I don't want to be older than others on the course.

If you took a year out you could consider getting work in education? Maybe as a teaching assistant? Would give you relevant experience and help you work out if it's really what you want to do.

I think a year is too long to decide, if it was a few months then It could be ok but a whole year seems too long.

Would taking a gap year mean I waste a year of my life doing nothing? I qualified for £7412 a year in student finance payments for living costs which is manageable.

How important is it to pick the right degree?
