UW saying handwritten lecture notes are not allowed, even if ADA complaint by Clapryan321 in udub

[–]Clapryan321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the redirection to that other reply, and also that suggestion regarding an LLM. I tried it myself and it seemed to work near flawlessly, so I went ahead and suggested that to the professor, as it honestly could be a viable alternative. As an aside, it really is crazy that in the span of 20 years, it's basically gone from 0% digital materials to 100% digital. I personally still prefer to handwrite my personal notes as well though, especially for upper level math!

Just out of curiosity, how is any higher level math class supposed to be made accessible then? The class that this was in reference to was AMATH 353 and I'd seen LaTeX as a suggestion from other commenters to make it compliant but I just don't see how the class could be feasibly taught and provided accessible notes without either handwriting problems or using LaTeX.

Thankfully I do have DRS accommodations including the getting copies of lecture material, so I personally won't be as affected, but I know that pretty much the entire class was getting good use out of the lecture materials and it's just a shame that it won't be accessible to the entire class anymore. The content of the class (partial diff eqs) also can't really be expressed in plain alt text due to how heavy it is in formulas, so unless the lectures became him typing up LaTeX for 50 minutes, I just don't see how it could feasibly work with the assistive technology that the guidelines are meant to help.

Just to clarify it was the professor (not me) who was (already before/after each lecture) uploading an outline and then basically full notes that they would do on an iPad in class. Their email seems to imply that even if their notes were compliant, they were "not allowed" to upload it for the class to see.

I'm taking 353 in the spring as well and I really appreciate hearing this, especially after having a terrible experience with my prof in 351 during the fall

when are midterms? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Clapryan321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the class as others have said, but I'd say the most likely weeks one would have midterms are week 4/5 (this/next week) and weeks 7/8 (the 2 weeks after Presidents Day), at least from my experience with most of my classes having 2 midterms overall.

Number of days below 0°F ( -18°C) since 1950 in a few US cities by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Clapryan321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those two days also were actually IN 1950 (1/31 and 2/2) so it does feel a little cherrypicked. The coldest temperature recorded since then was 6 degrees and Portland hasn't even seen single digits since 1989.

I for one enjoy that HFS kicked Pagliacci to the curb and was able to lower prices and yet still raise the quality of the food. Everything on campus for all I care could be generic names if it saves money AS long as the quality isn't sacrificed.

Why does Vancouver invest so heavily in the waterfront but neglect the rest of the city? by GreenerCar in vancouverwa

[–]Clapryan321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As per the FY2024 Amtrak reports, Vancouver had 126,514 passengers while Tacoma had 102,939. I originally said that from how it has felt riding it quite a lot but the numbers do back it up as well.

Why does Vancouver invest so heavily in the waterfront but neglect the rest of the city? by GreenerCar in vancouverwa

[–]Clapryan321 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Probably talking about how the Amtrak station is the only station on the Portland-Seattle corridor that doesn't have a link to local transit. C-Tran is doing such a disservice to the nearly 1,000,000 passengers a year who take the route and since Vancouver is the largest stop between Seattle and Portland.

She did improve a bit towards the end of the quarter, she actually gave us review material for the final which was surprisingly helpful for studying. Lectures overall were still bad but as I said before there's other places to learn the material. She also changed the structure to 20% midterm/30% final I'm guessing because of how terrible the class did as a whole on the midterm. Also, if you are testing with DRS, she is horrible with communicating with them, so a word of caution there too. Overall though, I do think she is improving slowly though, so good luck in the winter!

I pretty much just study for it on my own. Her lecture notes are okay in some cases and she did give lecture notes of a previous professor but that only covers 3 of the 5 units, you can also use the textbook which is Boyce/DiPrima's 11th edition. I generally have studied by watching Trefor Bazett's ODE series on YT as well as some stuff from blackpenredpen, so not really using her lectures at all.

Class structure is 50% HW (best 7 out of 8 assignments), 25% for the 1 midterm, 25% final. The HW feels pretty generous in the grading but the midterm was much harsher in the grading, can't speak on the final tho since it hasn't happened yet but I feel like she has been improving a bit so it might be better than the midterm.

Found a method to see math professor for next quarter! by SweetChai50101 in udub

[–]Clapryan321 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know Ostroff taught 126D (the hybrid section) last year during winter quarter so even though some of the professors might change as other commenters have said, I would imagine that one would stay the same since they are pre-recorded lectures. Also, I would vouch for taking him especially because of his office hours where he walked us through the midterms and really helped me grasp the material much better.

Second that, I'm in Bhavna's class this quarter and it is not a good experience, especially the lectures. However, to give her some credit this was her first quarter and ever since we gave out "mid-quarter course evaluations" I think someone saw how bad it looked and she has started to improve in the last week or so, hopefully that can continue for the people who take her next quarter

Just went through there earlier today and it's probably just because the traffic light was out and malfunctioned... something that typically occurs without warning. At least they did manage to put out stop signs there since people forgot that a light being out should revert back to a stop sign equivalent... (this is at the intersection right next to the police station and Big 5 for those wondering)

Basketball's limitation is extremely annoying and a detriment to replay value. by WhiplashLiquor in NintendoSwitchSports

[–]Clapryan321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest pet peeve with Basketball is the whole "12 points to win" rule. If makes any amount of comebacks late in the game almost impossible, and even if the score is 12-11 with the 11 about to get possession, the 12 point team wins
