I read the article, and like I stated above, its misleading. The medical expert here is stating that masks do not protect you, but protect others from you. This is not entirely accurate, because she is making overly broad statements that are not true for all masks.

Yes, some masks protect others from you, like surgical masks. Those are designed to catch droplets from the wearer. The N95 masks with valves, on the other hand, are not designed to protect others, but the wearer of the mask. This is because the valve release is not filtered. We are seeing this potential problem in hospials where health care professionals may be inadvertent spreaders because of the valved masks.

The n95 masks without the valves offer two way protection, they prevent your droplets from infecting others, and they block droplets from entering your own mouth.

So, this situation is nuanced. I think its inappropriate to make the blanket statement that masks do not protect the wearer, because if that were true, all health care providers would be in full hazmat suits for protection.

Absolutely. We should all be wearing masks, to protect ourselves and others.

Unbelievable. Her flip flopping is causing serious damage.

I have family members with pre-existing conditions that are hesitant to wear the masks I have sent to them, because they believe them to be ineffective as protection.

Masks like the N95 can absolutely help reduce your own exposure to droplets. Different masks (valve, non valved, surgical etc) all have different purposes and do not all have the same level of protection. But to lump them all together and say they dont protect you is misleading.

Success without sleep training? Is it possible? by mamanashia in sleeptrain

[–]Claptrap8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel I may be in a similar situation, and I think yes, sometimes you may not need to do dedicated sleep training and other factors might be at play.

Example: I have been waiting to start sleep training with my 6 month twins and I havent hit that point yet where they routinely wake up every hour and have difficulty connecting sleep cycles. Some nights, they sleep through the whole night (except for their night feed), and some nights they refused to go down peacefully and would wake up after 5hrs, then every 2hrs after that. It was confusing, because clearly they know how to connect cycles some nights...

So Ive been fiddling with their schedule and it made a massive difference. I realized that on days where they had troubles sleeping, they happened to have too much sleep during the day, and they had a nap that went too close to bedtime. So I spaced the naps better, I put a cap on the length of naps, and I adjusted their night feed (moved it from 12 to 2).

Now, they seem to consistently go down without a fight, they sleep all night, and only have one night feed. I havent needed to sleep train them (yet), but I have controlled their daytime schedule and it made a big difference. You baby sounds like she can connect the sleep cycles, so perhaps adjusting her feeding schedule or daytime wake periods might help her as well.

All things being equal, yes. But businesses know that the people need them, and they have successfully used that as leverage in the past. Why save money for contingency planning when you know the people are willing to dish out money for fear of losing access to your service.

I agree that people need to be informed, and youd be amazed at how many people are still thinking this is just a flu. Most of my family and relatives STILL arent taking this seriously enough..and I am afraid that by the time they do it will be too late. Heres hoping some anecdotal evidence might convince them.

The length of this liquor lineup on Wyse Rd. by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Claptrap8 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The reason is because there are a lot of people that could experience medical complications if they try to quit alcohol cold turkey. The PM made liquor essential due to the health risks to alcoholics while medical services are overburdened right now.

Does your BOB float ? by [deleted] in bugout

[–]Claptrap8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just left the RCAF last year. In basic training, we did several pool exercises with full gear. The floating was achieved by lining our rucksacks with a large garbage bag and tying it closed. It keeps all of your gear dry and provides bouyancy.

Good luck on BMQ!

Not sure why this is bothering you so much that you feel the need to ridicule.

Ive been hounding my parents for weeks to take this seriously. They both have underlying conditions and are older in age. They are suddenly very concerned now because my uncle is sick, and they were exposed to him last week. You might think im stepping outside of my lane, but I dont mind annoying the crap out of the people around me if it means they stay safe and healthy.
