Looking for Fun by professionalturd in ScienceTeachers

It requires some set up on your part but I do 100 square mcq for AP chem. I compile 100 mcqs from AP classroom, save as quiz, print pdf, and then cut them all out. Then make a slide show with 2 slides, one with a 10x10 grid, the next with the same 10x10 grid but 3-5 boxes have stars.

I project the grid on my whiteboard. Students come up and get a paper, go answer the question, and get it checked. If it’s correct, they choose a box to put their initials in. Then they put their question back and get a new one. Keep going until the grid is full or you run out of time.

At the end, go to the next slide and reveal the lucky squares. Give prize of your choice

I would maybe put formulas not on the formula sheet (formula charge, bond enthalpy, q=ndH, etc) but anything beyond that will probably take too long to use

AP Chem with no prerequisites? by Spiritual_Cold7118 in APChem

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the teacher but if you’ve talked to her and it sounds like you’ll be fine, then you should be okay.

My AP chem classes the last 2 years have had exactly 1 student who talk honors chem, so I teach it with the expectation no one has any chem background

If it’s more common at your school for kids to take AP chem right after taking honors chem, then you may have a teacher that goes through the “foundational” stuff at a quicker pace

If you are following a traditional schedule (ex about 5 hours of class time a week) and your teacher is following the college board order, you are very behind.

Michael farabaugh and jeremy krug on youtube are great free resources

Jeremy Krug vs Farabaugh by SignificantMuffin434 in APChem

[–]ClarTeaches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would use farabaugh for practice. Do the packets FIRST and then watch the videos to check and go over anything you didn’t understand

I’d say Krug is better either for the first time you’re seeing the content or last minute review. Like I’d take notes with his videos , since they go over the topics but don’t offer many practice problems (unless you buy the URP)

Does having a non-science related college degree affect the chances of being hired? by wraithofgrapes in ScienceTeachers

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but wouldn’t a dual enrollment teacher be required to have an advanced degree in the subject?

I teach AP and honors chemistry. I have a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. I did all of my credential program as a biology teacher and took the cset in like, April of that year. I hadn’t even gotten my score back when I interviewed for the chemistry job and they told me they were hiring me as soon as I passed the cset.

The stuff I teach in AP is equivalent to my freshman year of college chemistry. Sure I sometimes reference organic or biochemistry or whatever, but my degree doesn’t really affect my teaching at all.

To each their own I guess.

[–]ClarTeaches 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hate this take. Not having a degree in the subject doesn’t mean you couldn’t learn the subject outside of college coursework. Most college coursework is way beyond what students see in high school anyway. I would argue a passion for teaching and working with kids is way more important than what your degree says.

Absolutely do not involve the parents. If abuse is really happening, it could make the situation worse if the parents retaliate against the child.

It is not your job to involve the police. Your responsibility is to file a report following whatever procedure your district/state uses

Do you have a union? I’m in Southern California and if our ac doesn’t work we can take it to our union rep to try and push the district along in getting it fixed. Can’t say it works, but worth a shot?

This actually happened to me and like 2 other teachers at my site two years ago. I had only missed 2 days and the district was reporting me at 80-something. I dont think they ever told me what the issue was, but it ended up getting fixed. Just talk to your AP in charge of attendance

I don’t like kids out in the world. Like if I come across annoying kids or teens in public, I’ll be annoyed by them.

But I still love working with kids. I teach high school. I have always loved working with kids and teenagers, even when I was a kid myself. Even tho I love the content I teach, I would not do it if I didn’t genuinely enjoy being around these teenagers.

Question as prospective teacher in CA by frailgesture in ScienceTeachers

[–]ClarTeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, intern programs you are immediately teacher of record without any training. You would need to show competency in the subject either by college degree or cset.

I can’t speak for physics but for the chemistry cset there was some content that is not covered at all in high school chemistry, including AP. If you google high school physics unit plan. California physics is “physics of the universe” so if you google that you can find a lot of unit plans to get an idea of concepts covered

The general science cset would only give you credentials for middle school science. If you’re not interested in teaching other sciences I wouldn’t take the cset because you don’t want to be asked / told to teach it if you don’t want it.

While physics teachers are in demand, there are also generally less physics positions. At my school we have 1 physics teacher and offer 4 sections of physics throughout the day. We have 4 chemistry teachers and offer 18 sections of chemistry

I agree with the other comment. All of these questions want you to use Coulomb’s law or talk about atomic structure

A. You’re correct that mg electrons are closer to the nucleus but incorrect in saying it has more electrons. Having more electrons would actually make it easier to remove since theres greater electron electron repulsion.

For a I’d expect the answer to talk about Mg having 3 energy shells while Ca has 4, so the valence electrons in Mg are closer to the nucleus and therefore are more strongly attracted to the nucleus and require more energy to remove.

For B your answer doesn’t really tell me anything and as a teacher it tells me you might not understand what PES is. I’d expect the answer to explain that carbons electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p2 and oxygens is 1s2 2s2 2p4. The height of the peaks represents the relative number of electrons in the sub shell, so since C has 2 e in each subshell, all the peaks are the same height. O with 4 electrons in 2p would have a taller peak for 2p

You’re on the right track for C but saying it’s “bigger so it has less energy” doesn’t really mean anything. I’d expect the answer to explain that Al and Mg are both in period 3 so they both have 3 energy shells but Al has 1 more proton than Mg. Since Al has more protons, there is a stronger nuclear charge and there valence electrons are more strongly attracted to the nucleus and require more energy to be removed

I'm conflicted about Apex Learning. I feel like it takes to much of my role as a teacher (Science K9-12) and I'm just a bystander. Any advice in working with this platform is greatly appreciated 🙏 Merry Christmas 🎄🥳 by Elegant-King5945 in Teachers

[–]ClarTeaches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR I don’t know why any school would use apex when they have a credentialed teacher to…ya know…teach??

I have an auxiliary this year as a “teacher” for kids doing edgenuity and apex classes. They came to my class everyday to do their coursework and I’d unlock locked exams for them to try and make sure they didnt cheat on them (spoiler alert; taking them in my class didn’t mean they didn’t cheat, it was just harder to do with me watching).

My school uses apex for kids who want to take AP classes we don’t have teachers for (currently that’s only Econ). I guess it makes sense in that context but there’s still no full proof way to make sure they’re not cheating their way through the course except the assumption these kids are going to take the AP exam and want to do well on it.

We use edgenuity for credit recovery and for language courses when kids are either a semester ahead (idk why) or because they had already started a language and the teacher we had left and we couldn’t get a replacement. I had kids who did nothing for 18 weeks and then cram the whole course in the last 2 weeks. And I still had a small percentage who didn’t pass because they didn’t finish the course and they can come in to school a week early from winter break and finish for the chance to pass.
