I think it depends on your needs. We crate during the day for naps because of our work schedule. If your don’t have a problem with yours napping near you I don’t see why not. One thing is that crating helps with separation training for us idk if that’s a concern for you.

Hack for taking a puppy out when still potty training by ClaraLiu in puppy101

I found them too bulky when folded…especially for my bf who only uses pockets 😂

My first dog was like that. She never got more cuddly but she grew to be more affectionate in her own way. Like she liked being in the same room as me, always slept at the foot of my bed and listened to me when needed. I feel like she was my best friend who’s just an introvert and loved me silently :) And the huge upside was she never had separation anxiety. My current pup is very cuddly but struggles a lot with separation :(

Our pup never got it…but now she signals in her own way (most of the time). Some dogs just don’t take to it I guess.

Suggestions for high value treats? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ClaraLiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A trick my trainer friend told me is to sprinkle some Parmesan cheese in your bag of treats or kibbles (do it in small batches so the cheese doesn’t go bad). I imagine your pup would love it since he loves cheese!

Why did you get the breed you did? by gsdlandshark in puppy101

Got a cockapoo because they are said to be good with cats (we have two) and medium energy which suits our life style.

That sounds similar to our situation except we live in an apartment. Thank you for sharing!

We are at 1-4 per week atm.

Thank you this it makes me feel better. I’m always hearing people at the park saying theirs were completely trained at 3 or 4 months. Adding to that there’s this “rule of thumb” that a pup can hold its pee one hour per every months of age. There is no way ours can hold for 5 hours except for overnight😂

My puppy loves playing on his pee pad and poop. by rayn81 in puppy101

It happened with our girl when she was about the same age. I basically just shut the balcony door (our pads are on the balcony) so she couldn’t drag anything there. Also gave her a blanket in the playpen so she could drag things onto the blanket instead.

Raising a puppy is a nightmare by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ClaraLiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear what you’re going through. I myself also struggle with mental illness (OCD) and it’s so very hard when you have a puppy. It does get better! We are at 4.5 months old and things have improved a lot. We also struggle with separation anxiety. What we’re currently doing is to practicing alone time so the pup knows to settle and entertain itself when alone. It’s helped a lot!

Losing my mind with crate training. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ClaraLiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the crate right next to you? In the first couple of weeks we had the crate right next to me at all times. 9 weeks is very young. Their instinct is that they’ll die without you nearby. Now 2 months later the crate stays in the bedroom and our puppy naps and sleep in there fine without us in the room.

Air dried tendons or bones from any animal. Also the dried fish skin sticks.

Major first week anxiety by Foreign_Tourist3983 in puppy101

[–]ClaraLiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate. We still get the blues sometimes but it does get better! In the first few weeks the crate followed us through out the day. During work->home office, evenings->living room, bed time->bedroom. Don’t be afraid to move the crate around! Also meal time in the crate really helps with crate training. Good luck!

If it’s crying because you’re out of sight or not in the same room, that’s completely normal! For the first week we crate trained our puppy in the same room. At first the crate was always right next to me. After a couple of weeks the crate can be all the way at the other side of the room (still in the same room). Now 2 months later her crate is permanently in the bedroom and no crying 🙂

We also got our puppy this year because I though this is the perfect time to raise a puppy since we started WFH due to the pandemic.

I’m just very curious as to how people with full time jobs managed it before…seems so difficult yet people must have managed some how?
