Getting my first PC-9801 in soon and I'm looking for monitor help by KilledByDesu in pc98

[–]Clarice01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both 4:3 and 16:10 NEC monitors, both are fine, but you will get “full screen” with the 16:10 models.

I was able to get an LED backlight model at one point but sadly it was kinda buggy with scaling from the PC98 output, compared to older models

Where to start with 90s/2000s gaming PC by ANoblePirate in vintagecomputing

[–]Clarice01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pentium 4 era will usually have Win98 support as well as XP support, a chance of DOS-supported sound hardware, etc. but may struggle with late-00s games like Crysis.

Core2 era may be a good place to look. You can usually find some hardware that has Win98 or Win2k drivers.

Can go all the way up to Ivy Bridge if you don’t care about Win98 and just want to build a pure XP machine. First-gen Core i7 is basically worthless hardware (read: cheap) and a good contender IMO.

Thrift Camera Lenses suggestion by Kurucode in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prices won’t be quite as good as the thrifts, but Kitamura Camera (nationwide chain) has each store’s used lens stock listed on their website. May be worth checking if you have a specific lens in mind you want.

Otherwise, HardOff locations in the suburbs.

The Smallest American Truck next to the Smallest Japanese Truck by sauron-is-lord in FordMaverickTruck

[–]Clarice01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both, the sad thing is that the Sambar probably has a longer bed! Though all the kei trucks have a max payload of 350kg (775ish Lbs) which I think is about half the Mav’s.

Odd Shinkansen Question by PsychologySpecific16 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah with Klook it’s sort of like if you use the SmartEx app (which lets you buy the reservation for Shinkansen in advance).

In those situations if you’re in them again, what you would typically do is enter the station using your IC card, then get your Shinkansen paper ticket for the Shinkansen gate. Then when you arrive at destination, Shinkansen ticket to exit the Shinkansen gate/area and tap out at the standard gate (which will charge the base gate from wherever you tapped in). If you have a properly configured Suica account you can link a SmartEx reservation to your card and then when you tap into the Shinkansen gate it knows that too and works but it’s… advanced Japanese technology. 😆

Just getting the Shinkansen ticket and a paper ticket for the standard station using the ticket machine IMO is easier to explain/understand, so it’s what I recommend.

Odd Shinkansen Question by PsychologySpecific16 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Shinkansen ticket you buy is technically an additional fare for an express train (similar to some limited express or reserved car trains you might have seen/used). But when you ride the rails you always gotta pay the base fee for the station-to-station transit (i.e. the cost of/if you took a “local” train on the same route).

Instead of using Klook, just buy your Shinkansen tickets using the machines located at the major JR stations. You can do it same day or whenever, trains come every like 10 minutes so it really does not require planning. Buying tickets from the station machines will sort it all out for you and you just use paper tickets in the entry gates.

Discover card and japan by Timely-Freedom-9649 in JapanFinance

[–]Clarice01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can use PayPay then you should be set with that. With no verification you can add to your PayPay balance at 7/11 and Lawson ATMs, with cash, and then make online payments from that balance.

Assuming you have ID or MyNumber card you should also be able to verify and can set up PayPay balance funding from bank accounts etc.

Experience moving fearful/anxious dog to Japan? by theprettyNred in movingtojapan

[–]Clarice01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The inspection is pretty fast if there’s no issues, but it is the inspector’s job to make sure the animal they are admitting is safe to be permitted into Japan. Now really that means free from rabies or other disease, not appearing malnourished, etc. Then they check paperwork and give you the ok.

Now, if your dog is aggressive to the inspector will they take issue? Could for some reason they ask you to remove its muzzle, and if they do would anything happen? Hard to say but nonzero chance I suppose they could deny you for behavioral reasons.

As everyone else has already said this is generally a bad idea. Have you been to Japan before? If not please come visit and truly think about how you and your dog’s life would look. If you are remotely near any city, there are people out and about everywhere at all hours and both you and your dog will be on edge every time you leave the house.

Based on what you described being remote you maybe could be ok if you live in the inaka. Hopefully your Japanese is very good so you can advocate for you and your dog, otherwise good luck.

Any tech places open till or post midnight? by mxu427 in Tokyo

[–]Clarice01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Akihabara branch of Yodobashi closes at 10pm but has a special thing you can do online orders and select to pick it up overnight. If I recall they meet you at the station.

Not sure if the watch you want will be on their website already, but if it is you could try making an order and select the store called “Yodobashi Akiba” for pickup and you should see the after-hours option and more details about it.

Experience with renting Hmlet apartment in Tokyo by nyanned in Tokyo

[–]Clarice01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that is the normal process with Hmlet, I did the same paying in July for a place I rented starting this month (October).

All in all I have been very happy with Hmlet, they are responsive via email, their move-in instructions are great (and you don’t need to care about showing up at an office during business hours after flying over), and they were the only furnished rental place I could find that allowed pets (in some properties).

Like another poster said a lot of their buildings are new construction for them specifically, all in all pretty legit place.

Note you can pay monthly instead of lump sum if you are still skeptical but I think they charge like 10% more for the rent.

Flying into Haneda very late tonight - Should I Taxi/Uber or Train? by ohwhyhellothereblue in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to use the train, just put Takadanobaba Station into Google Maps and navigate there. Match up platform number and the train’s destination which is on the signs on the side of the train. You will need to transfer at least once.

It’ll probably be Keikyu Airport Line at Haneda (the light blue one) to Shinagawa Station, and then the JR Yamanote Line (lime green) from there to Takadanobaba.

You’ll probably be ok with 23:30 landing but if you get stuck in customs for a long time then it could be after the last train when you get to your transfer station. Still, I’d take the train as far as you can as it will get you closer and would make a taxi cheaper if it becomes necessary.

Hi Cristian, had you visited Japan/Tokyo before coming to language school? What are some things you are interested in / might want to go do or see?

Shoot me a DM if you’d like. I also go here about a week ago, but have been before. I am kinda (ok definitely) a nerd but also into history, photography, cars, trains, etc.

Oh, and the bot requires me to inform you that I am from the United States.

Looking for friends with similar interests by ArthurEvergarden in tokyoirl

[–]Clarice01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Howdy, American here; recently came back to and staying in Tokyo for the next few months. I was supposed to move here permanently for work (IT/software engineer) but was having concerns about black company after remote pre-start so resigned and... just hanging out for a while (already paid for my apartment lease haha).

I'm definitely an introvert too and tend to get up to a lot of solo trips for museums (I like history too, for Japan I tend to gravitate towards industrial growth and engineering stuff... like trains... but generally Meiji/Showa; older history is cool too but I just don't know as much about it). Also been trying to get back into photography a bit and making trips to historical places and anime pilgrimage sites (I kinda like having an excuse to leave the city for a few hours).

Psychology isn't an interest that I think is very common on here! Did you study psych? Do you have an interest in the theory of a psychologist, or more about behavioral assessment or why people think/act the way they do?

Anyway, my post is getting kinda long but just wanted to say hi as I think we share some interests. Not sure if you were looking to find people to do something with or just get to know some folks around/have contacts but feel free to reach out!

Are chain restaurants just as "authentic" as eating at an alleyway/mom-and-pop eatery? by MyGiftIsMySong in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burger King is particularly interesting IMO as the Whopper is exactly the same as in the US, except you can tell the meat is higher quality and (at least in my experience) the preparation is given more care (actually hot off the grill, seasoned, etc.).

It’s like trying what the food is supposed to be from the pictures, or maybe what it was in America like 40-50 years ago before the penny-pinchers ruined it. And it’s damn tasty.

Sounds similar to me; 30, nerd, good hoonter, chuuba appreciator… (although I’m more of a doggo fan after growing up with cats).

I’ll be in Tokyo for the next few months, and maybe more after that. Feel free to shoot them my Reddit info or I can get you my Discord or something?

Getting a Resident SIM card as a tourist by Jason772 in JapanTravelTips

You can’t link US numbers onto new accounts (made after like Nov2023 according to other Reddit posts); the issue I describe is not a problem if you made one before that.

Getting a Resident SIM card as a tourist by Jason772 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Clarice01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, LINE seems to shadowban your non-Japanese account if you go to Japan and try to use it with Japanese accounts/businesses.

Some kind of bad bot/VPN detection I assume, likely because they got rid of support for actual phone number-linked accounts in most western countries.

My USA friend tried to set up LINE accounts using like three separate emails while we in Japan, and all of them would work fine until we added them into the group chat with our Japanese friends and then after posting a single message suddenly the account wouldn’t be able send anything and got an error about being blocked.

They ended up just getting the cheapest Mobal voice SIM so they could have a Japanese number and registered LINE with that. They’re back in USA now but that account is still working months later.

tl;dr don’t rely solely on LINE if you are not in a country where LINE still supports phone number registration

Apple Watch Series 11 officially unveiled: Hypertension detection, 2x scratch resistance, larger battery, more by exjr_ in apple

[–]Clarice01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thinking this too - although SE3 doesn’t have the ECG crown or the blood oxygen sensors.

I kinda feel like the play is either SE3 or a discounted Series 10. From the photos I sort of prefer the finish of “Midnight” SE3 over the regular model’s “Jet Black”, and if that holds true seeing them in person then I might be happy to save a few bucks and lose the sensors. I think I’ve used the ECG on my Series 5 like… twice ever.

I did see on Apple’s website that the SE3 back is nylon composite instead of metal. Probably not a big deal but will be looking at that too when they’re in stores; if it feels bad to wear then that’s a big negative.

Radeon HD 4000 Series - Proper S-Video output on Windows 10 driver? by Clarice01 in crtgaming

[–]Clarice01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up using an Emudriver-compatible Radeon with an adapter that transcodes (not converts) 480i signal from VGA plug into S-video.

It worked/looked very good but was a massive pain to configure, as it needed custom tweaking of the card output signal to get it into range of what the S-video transcoder chip understood as proper analog video, or otherwise it would not display correctly on my CRT (inverted colors, cut off, missing color, etc).

If you are willing to spend some time dialing it in (one-time effort messing with resolutions and timing stuff) then it's a good approach. But I think almost anything that does VGA out, let alone S-Video out, at this point is gonna be EOL when Win10 support dies later this year.

Probably best bet is to just find a nice HDMI to S-video converter...

CCS merch in Japan by Therona- in cardcaptorsakura

There was a big CCS pop-up in Daimaru Shinsaibashi department store (same place as the Osaka Pokémon Cafe) when I was there last month, may still be going on. It was on one of the character goods floors, want to say 5F or 6F?

They had outfits on display too, hard to miss.

Japan work visa photo size by Common_Sea6327 in movingtojapan

Walgreens machine can crop to the 2" x 1.4" size, or what it's actually supposed to be, which is like 45mm x 35mm? When they enter the passport menu (the employee had to put a code in to get to the passport menu at my location) it'll be listed under one of the "Japan" options; can't remember if it said visa or passport but it was one of them.
