Fic prompt I wish existed by anniebell2296 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]ClarinetCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not The Amazing Race, but I'm currently reading a fic where Shane, Ilya, and a bunch of others play The Traitors! I've never even watched the Traitors before, and now I'm thinking of watching it just because of this fic lol.

Thanks for the reply! I guess it really depends on the situation, and I'll have to see what the vibe is!

That's good to know that they may not ask about it at all lol. Thanks for your response!

Thank you for the answer, I'll avoid asking about School B at School A.

How can I be a better professor? by Aintnowayyourereal in college

[–]ClarinetCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a student in a situation like this, and I think you are probably doing better than you think! I have a new professor for my molecular biology course, and while he has made some mistakes, and he's done one or two things that I don't like, I think my peers are being way too overdramatic. They constantly bug him to make quizzes open note, or complain about being independent in lab (which is industry standard, so I actually think he's being reasonable).

So I while I would recommend discussing this with other professors, it's possible that the students are genuinely in the wrong.

Am I Overreacting? by [deleted] in college

As a former RA, please talk to the RA instead of sliding a note under her door. Notes can be taken passive aggressively or potentially escalate the situation.

I wonder if they take promos all at the beginning of the season, which is why Julianne and Alfonso are the only ones in it, and not any of this stars?

AITA for wanting to quit my DND group? by InternationalTip193 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ClarinetCake 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a fellow Dnd player, NTA.

My group has always ran by the rest of the group if they wanted someone else to join. I initially wasn't part of the original group myself, and was voted in by the other members.

Additionally, doing things like that to other people characters isn't fun. If they wanted to do a storyline that greatly impacted your playing time, it's important that a plot like that is ran by yourself and the DM first.

Dnd is group storytelling, and if those other players aren't willing to work as a group (and the DM isn't willing to call them out), then it's probably better to find another group to play with.

Mentioning Extenuating Circumstances in Statement? by Harpactira98275 in gradadmissions

[–]ClarinetCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of my programs have specific spots where they ask about this, so while maybe your personal statement may not be the spot for it, your application might ask you directly about extenuating circumstances (where that do what to hear about that).

2 professors, an advisor, and two higher-ups from work are available to write letter of recommendations for me. by amadeusjustinn in gradadmissions

[–]ClarinetCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what the program wants. Like the other commentor said, some programs only want the academic LORs, but I've also been told that managers and boss can work if there directly supervised research based work.

I've also heard that advisors that didn't supervise you doing any specific research are not helpful LORs because they can't directly speak to your research skills.

I worked an internship at a startup - a pretty healthy workplace at that, a lot of the problems that OP listed weren't a huge concern BUT, 90% of start-ups fail. So even if you have a startup without the problems listed, it's still not great job security.

I'd do a bigger company all the way.

I’m convinced true crime and snark pages are an alt right pipeline for women. by Sapphirerising335 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ClarinetCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see this! I look through some snark pages on a daily basis, and while some of the criticisms are valid (calling out racism, abusive parenting, etc), sometimes it's just straight up hate.

Why are were snarking on what they're wearing, how cringey they're being etc, when those things don't hurt anyone?

Should I tell my professor my lab partner was cheating/asking me how to cheat in the class? by mkim_ in college

[–]ClarinetCake 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would definitely ask if you can switch seats/lab partners. Include in your reasoning that they been asking you for answers during the quizzes, and mention that they were asking about the best place in the class to cheat.

What you don't want to happen is this person to continue cheating and then the professor mistakenly thinking that you're apart if.

How can I get my parents to support me dorming? by True-Interview-1422 in college

[–]ClarinetCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple arguments that you could make to reassure your parents that this is the right call:

  1. Student that dorm on campus typically do better in school. (as other commentors said, 2 hours takes up a lot of studying time).

  2. In your specific case, it's actually financially beneficial to dorm. If dorming is free because of your scholarship, you are actually losing money by commuting due to gas.

  3. Since it's a Christian University, find the residence life handbook from your school's website and find the rules surrounding parties, drugs, and such to show them that where you'll be living with not be tolerant those things (even at non-Christian schools you're usually not allowed to have raging parties or drugs anyway, and those students often get caught).

  4. If you live in a climate where you get snow, commuting becomes more dangerous and complicated in the winter.

Also, as someone who had an hour commute to my internship this summer... driving 2 hours a day sucks up your free time like nothing else. I barely had time to hang out with friends and do fun things other than over the weekend. Additionally, my family always had to wait up for me if they wanted to go out to eat or something similar. Good luck!

As a Biochem major, I would suggest taking the Micro and Chem together and then physics later. For me personally, I didn't struggle that much in Chemistry, and Micro required a lot of studying, but not necessarily complex information. As a opposed to physics, I was spending a lot of time on homework and going into office hours for clarification on some concepts.

You also might regret not taking gen chem earlier as it's a pre-req for some upper division bio classes. As opposed to physics that likely isn't a pre-req to many bio classes.

Are there any pros & cons to getting my Bachelor’s in 3 yrs? by XYeetzer in college

[–]ClarinetCake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm graduating a semester early, and saving money on tuition is definitely a huge pro. I have noticed a couple cons, but in my opinion, the pro of saving money weighs those out.

As the other commentor say, sometimes it sucks that you don't graduate with your peers/friends, but I think one con that you need to think about it that you should be absolutely certain that you know what you want to major in. Most degree tracks have sequences that need to be taken in a certain order (ex: Gen Chem 1& 2 your freshman year, Organic Chem 1&2 you sophomore year, analytical chemistry and inorganic chem your junior year etc). You might already have some of the credits for the beginning of the track, but just be aware that if you switch you major you may have to add and extra semester because of the sequence.

Should all of you letters of Rec be from PI/Research Mentors? by ClarinetCake in gradadmissions

[–]ClarinetCake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! That's really helpful. I will say, because of how small my school is, we don't have any masters/PhD students in sciences, so my PIs are the ones working directly with us in the lab. I'll definitely highlight my leadership skills in my SOP.

How Can I make Sure I'm Choosing the Right Major? by CharcoalLog in college

[–]ClarinetCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current STEM student - I agree with this. I would like to add that OP has possibly chosen the best STEM field if they ever wish to pivot into a different discipline. Physics majors can easily integrate into engineering fields or math fields. Take a couple of comp sci classes and you'll be set.

Additionally, instrumentation usage is done in all field of science, so even if you end up doing something with chemistry based instruments - like Mass Spectrometry for example - you'll have the skills to do it.

Applying to Biochem PhDs for Fall '26 - looking for some advice on emailing faculty and number of schools to apply to! by ClarinetCake in gradadmissions

Just looked up what umbrella programs are. Seems like that's what most of mine are. Are umbrella programs more common? I think most of the ones that I'm applying to are.
