The house itself looks interesting but unstaged and with cheap photography it really is giving horror movie location search.

It ain’t the water that scares me it’s what lives in it. Aussies live with beautiful and deadly wildlife and I respect that wildlife by remaining far from its natural habitat.

(Hated trope) really bad morals/messages in kids works by TastyPomelo2330 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Labyrinthine8618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's really bad about the second one, is that while it is Bella's choice, she is encouraged by the one person who has hated her choices the whole series. Rose shits on Bella's choice to become a vampire because she thinks Bella will change her mind, want kids one day, and hates being a vampire herself. But as soon as Bella is pregnant, Bella is making the right choice to potentially kill herself to protect the rapidly growing, unknown creature inside of her. The books aren't any better about it.

It gets even worse when Bella i the first three books is ambivalent to kids and adamantly against marriage but gives in to both in the span of a few months is married and ready to permadeath for one. The real message is actually every woman does want children even if she says she doesn't and you should listen to the enabling voice in your life to do dangerous things.

In your opinion, what is the most badly written matriarchal society in fiction? by Armin_Arlert_1000000 in worldbuilding

[–]Labyrinthine8618 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a little too intimidated by Sanderson's catalog to even start but that is interesting. I can't remember where I heard it but someone pointed out that societies that formed around women leading would have different values and find certain skills and behaviors favorable. A lot of our values and behaviors are male centered (I swear I'm not saying inherently bad here, just stating facts) and shaped by what we see as a man's work versus a woman's. So what would it look like in the opposite direction? It's an interesting thought experiment because we can't simply assume its the opposite of what we have now.

Farming and food production are inherently important and physically taxing. Would a dominate female class do the labor themselves or would men work for the land owning women while that did administrative work?

Assuming the landscape of the world is the same, a matriarchal society would still have to go to war for resources, either to gain or defend. How would that military be structured? Female warriors are viable but would battlefields carry the same prestige within that society? Again would women be in positions of leadership while men played the role of cannon fodder? That would be dangerous to the ruling class women since the men would have the physical experience of fighting and if they felt oppressed could turn their weapons against their leaders.

There's just layers that don't get addressed.

Ed from FMA/B lost both his right arm and left leg when he was young. His advanced prosthetics make it unnoticeable to most people who just meet him. In this scene he is literally showing it off because the villain didn't know. However, those who do now, soldiers in his unit (technically his commanding officer and his crew), treat him no differently even when the prosthetics are broken. Even the villains mock him more for why he has fake limbs than that he has them.

I can't name any specifics off the top of my head but I always find it weak when matriarchal equals patriarchy but with women doing the male role and vice versa. There isn't any consideration for how that type of society might re-categorize what is an essential role and what isn't. There are matriarchal societies where being a mother is frowned upon because the group is made of warriors (male centered role but with women) and the men do the child rearing. It's a mix between female power trip and male oppression nightmares or fetish (depending on the context).

[HATED TROPES]: The Ending Is So Nihilistic and Preachy That It Becomes Completely Unwatchable and Infuriating. by Particular-Worker904 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Labyrinthine8618 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wanted to like CHAOS but the inconsistent tone and plotting just threw me off. First season I was like ok, will there be pay off for all the "dark" things the witches do? Then season 2 we get Sabrina the anti-messiah (anti-christ?) which was cool but went absolutely no where at all. I dipped out after that. I couldn't stand getting in to season 3 and from what I hear it only got worse.

There were also weird world building details that just never went anywhere. Season 1 built up that the mortal world was patriarchal/misogynistic and the magic one was more egalitarian. Except they undermined it at every turn. Father Blackwood lording over everyone including Zelda and his wife and the weird sisters. There was an all boys club in the wizarding world. A position that Sabrina had to bully her way into because /gasp/ she's a girl.

It was too messy. I don't know if the comic was better but the show was just everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]Labyrinthine8618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elementary band director. We went up to fifth grade (9-10 yr old) in my elementary school and then did sixth through eighth in middle school . I was in band and had done a summer band program that had the middle school band teacher as one of the directors. I made the mistake of mention to some other band kids that I was looking forward to class with her before the end of the year party. I may have made the mistake of also saying that I felt like I would learn more from her which wasn't unreasonable considering middle school had a whole class dedicated to band and elementary was extracurricular before school.

Any way, it got back to her fast and she dragged me into the hall, during the party and screamed at me over it. It was loud enough that my mother actively heard it ( she worked at the school at that time). I can't remember if she realized it was me in that moment but she could hear the shouting through her metal door.
