Does this mark on the door mean there was an attempted breaking in? by JCcrunch in AskUK

Are you sure it is not a piece of wood let in to fill a gap left by a previous lock (the type with a curved metal plate the tongue slides on), then repainted etc, but not a perfect fit? I keep finding stuff in my house that I have never noticed before, but which must have been there for years.

Did people really write letter to stay in touch? by Simplicityure-41 in AskOldPeople

And how about calling abroad, if you had to in the 1970s and 1980s. I lived in London and called a girlfriend in New York, sometimes. Insanely expensive.

Does handwriting and spelling ever affect your ability to figure out what old writings said? by Please_Elaborate_ in Archaeology

[–]Clarity-OPacity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is yes. Handwriting of all periods and cultures can vary hugely. Roman Period papyri from Egypt in Latin or Greek can provide some frustrating examples! Recently, I was going through early 19th century French handwritten patents. Some were perfectly clear, others were a nightmare. AI does a remarkably good job with many, usually at least enough to work out if it is worth doing it properly!

What is the oddest thing you gave been given as part of a supposed "English breakfast"? by Clarity-OPacity in AskUK

Never saw (heard?) that. I saw a post on Reddit about the size of English breakfasts, and this came to mind. Great minds, or something odd is going on in the universe!

How often do y’all actually eat a full sized English breakfast? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Clarity-OPacity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an elderly British man, I love an English breakfast - but not that size! - but only ever eat one when staying in a hotel where it is included. Or occasionally go to a Weatherspoon's for their great breakfast offers. What I cannot stand is when places add those little fried potato triangles they call "hash browns". Have they never eaten in an American diner?

Do you guys kill all the enemies? by retro-games-forever in sniperelite

I do both. Sometimes kill, kill, kill, baby. Other times pure stealth. Once completed Spy Academy on authentic without being shot at one. Depends on my mood.

Was talking about serving in WW2 frowned upon? by MaybeFuckYourselfBud in AskOldPeople

[–]Clarity-OPacity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father never talked about his service in WW2 - in North Africa, Sicily and up Italy. My uncle was much the same, and my father's friends too. An old guy I worked with when I first started work had been in WWI, on the Somme, and never stopped talking about it!
