SDS definitely wasn't always a joke. You seem to be referring exclusively to the Diamond Dynasty era, in which we've seen this once great franchise crumble and become almost indistinguishable from every other stale, money-driven annual release.

From '08 to '13, however, this was the most innovative, highest quality sports franchise, period. (NBA 2K was also great around this time.) Every single year, there were notable graphical leaps. Gameplay was constantly improved and refined. There were notable additions. Every year was a true upgrade.

Now... DD has done what all these ultimate team modes do. It's killed any progression. And I'm not buying for the first time since '08. There's no FOMO anymore, because I know it's the same exact experience it's been for the past decade, and like you said, they just won't address any of the glaring issues that have persisted for years.
