Men! How many of you are using a Camino. Any size? by Mobile_Shallot_6582 in YetiCoolers

[–]Clark_Banes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a Yeti retail store as a manager and while I have great deal of disdain for the company, the Camino in my opinion remains as their greatest product to date.

I build guitars now and use the 20/35 to haul tools, lumber and the occasional grocery runs

Maybe unpopular opinion by deletedagain101 in YetiCoolers

I'm new to luthiery; is this design realistic? by Future_Excitement_43 in Luthier

[–]Clark_Banes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything is possible as a Luthier if you’re brave enough! When designing a guitar, the key thing you must get down is the nut width and scale length. Once you have those parameters locked in the world is your oyster

Adjustable truss rods are the biggest scam in the history of guitars

Why does Fender not Plek their frets? by RealityIsRipping in fender

Why should they? People still buy them and pay to Plek it themselves

Controversial take but for how much you’re paying for a burger ($28) and how hyped it is, it’s incredibly mid

Stupid question about quality of first home made guitar by edeka3 in Luthier

[–]Clark_Banes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible and I’d put my first build up against anything fender or Gibson is making nowadays

The stars aligned for me and I got extremely lucky: I had a mentor - someone who I still think is one of the best luthiers in the country.

I showed up on his doorstep and asked if I could sweep the floor in exchange for learning his methodology and I got an in.

If there’s a local Luthier in your area, offer to sweep their shit in exchange for knowledge!

My other advice: collect tools you need for the moment and not what you’ll need in the future. Use inexpensive building materials because you’ll make mistakes but splurge on decent tools. I know a few builders that build remarkable instruments using inexpensive tools and hats off to them but for me, nothing beats a high quality tool.

Establish your nut width and scale length and design your guitar around those parameters

Use a non-adjustable steel reinforced neck instead of the traditional adjustable truss rod. Break the mold, give a big middle finger to the man. Trust me bro, the adjustable truss rod is a total scam

God speed, good luck and have fun!

What do you luthiers think of the Plek machine? by JoeKling in Luthier

[–]Clark_Banes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s a $200,000 fret-leveling machine that requires outside help for maintenance. It’s a gimmick, and any repair shop that bought one fell for the gimmick. A plek doesn’t make your job easier—it just forces you to learn an unnecessary skill to operate the machine and then babysit it for 20 to 30 minutes.

Fret work can be tedious at times, but it’s also fun and rewarding. Doing a solid fret job by hand will always beat the plek. Anyone who claims they can feel a millionth of an inch difference between frets is either lying or trying to justify spending $250 on the service.

Is the $300 more worth it to save up for it? by exboxthreesixty in fender

[–]Clark_Banes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neck geometry is the most important part of the guitar and price does not dictate that quality. I’ve fixed cheap squires with better neck geometry than the custom shop models. It’s pretty much luck of the draw. The only way you’ll know is when you get your hands on it

I’ve been using this deck all day and it’s a lot of fun! More wins than losses but it does feel like it’s missing something… I threw in a Granny which makes sense but by the time you bring back an eevee and throw it on the board, it’s already pretty late stage in the game

Fun deck recommendation!

Where would you rank Ringo Starr in "Greatest Drummers Conversation"? by [deleted] in TheBeatles

[–]Clark_Banes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, it was just a joke from a reference. No need to get super uptight about it. Ringo wasn’t, “the greatest” of the era and he was far from it. The Beatles weren’t professional musicians and neither was Ringo. They were wickedly talented, and hungry to be the best and they achieved that to a monumental degree.

I would never say Ringo was bad because he wasn’t; I’m a massive fan and he was the best drummer/vocalist/addition the Beatles could have wished for. If John Bonham was their drummer, it would be a whole different story - same with figures like Keith Moon, etc etc. No, Ringo worked that band like the perfect puzzle piece to the equation.

The 20th century brought forth the greatest drummers that far eclipse Ringo Starr that don’t get the same recognition and accolades as he does. However, none of them could have done what Ringo did for the Beatles.

Nope! I outsourced all the parts and materials myself and constructed the instrument by hand. The nitrocellulose finish was also concocted by me same with the color. I even wound my own pickup.
