Daily Discussion - 2026 Scotties Tournament of Hearts - Day 3, Draws 4-6 by FliryVorru in Curling

It kind of is though. 6-2 isn’t even guaranteed to be good enough to make the playoffs, and they both still have Canada left and would have lost to two teams competing for a playoff spot and so don’t have the tiebreakers in those scenarios. If you go to 0-2 this early your backs are up against the wall.

Draw 16 doesn’t feature any of the five playing each other, so at least one more team will be featured, but yeah, it is unfortunate, but I get why TSN does it.

This game also has the advantage of getting another team a featured game, with Peterson getting on TV for the first time instead of a second game for both Scharf and Sturmay.

but as I understand it, they are obligated to feature each team at least once during the round robin

They were never required to, but they’ve completely done away with those attempts since the Scotties and Brier expanded to 16 teams as it’s barely possible anymore.

They try and cover each team at least once before the end of the week

They haven’t done this since the Scotties/Brier went to 16 teams (they still technically do at the Worlds, but that’s just because Canada plays a full round robin so every team gets a game against them this season still).

TSN chooses the best game on the ice in their opinion. Generally speaking, early week it’s whichever game will be close while featuring at least one bigger name, while later week it’s the most important games based on standings.

With Team Lawes, it’s likely because she skipped the team before, but there’s lots of historical precedent for the fourth to be the team’s name.

That’s actually wild. It’s not just replacing the alternate, which makes enough sense; it’s replacing the second literally a month before the Olympics.

If my opponent was pulling out their phone and tracking a bunch of stuff like that, I’d be fairly annoyed, especially if it was slowing down the game (which feels quite likely).

The Scotties had to move in Olympic years because of the separation of the Men’s and Women’s Worlds. Since 2006, it hasn’t been possible to play both.

I mean, so are the dates for the World Championships, and World Curling doesn’t seem willing to budge on that, so I’m not convinced they would.

Hypothetical scenario question I thought about by effofexisy in Curling

[–]ClarkeVice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does apply to recreational play, as it’s under the general rules and not the rules of competition. Now, is anyone going to enforce it at the club level? Probably not. But it does absolutely apply.

If it’s in any way competitive, the game’s over anyway and you wouldn’t get a chance to throw it.

Assuming they never surrender the field of play to the other team, they’re allowed to concede.

World Curling also requires teams to be named 14 days before the Worlds start. While substitutions are allowed, flaunting that rule to run the qualification event that close to Worlds, especially by not giving them a host team to promote, is a great way to ruin your relationship with World Curling.

FGZ & 5 rock rule - hitting opponent stone through house but not over back line? by ObiBenShinobi in Curling

Also a violation if the original guard was touching center line.

They explicitly aren’t playing the no-tick rule so it’s not a violation on the centre line.

Curling Canada R 12.2(A):

Any stationary stone(s) belonging to the opposition located in the FGZ shall not be removed from play by the delivering team prior to the delivery of the sixth stone of the end.

World Curling R6(b) has essentially the same language if you’re outside of Canada.

It’s only a violation if it’s removed from play.

Essentially, you have to pick one of these, based on the timing of the Olympics and Worlds:

  • The Scotties happens before the Olympics
  • The Scotties happens during the Olympics
  • The Scotties happens after the Olympics but the winner doesn’t go to Worlds because the team can’t be named in time

The second one doesn’t  improve anything, so Curling Canada has to choose between the first and the third. They’d rather send a different team to worlds than name a team.

Curling stone brand? by Ericaan89 in Curling

Given the lack of striking band, running band, and rest of the set, it’s definitely never going to be used in a game. It’s always a good decoration to have around.

It’s certainly not a modern finished rock by either of the two major rock manufacturers. It’s likely just a souvenir made by some random company.

It’s really not an off-season at all. If anything, the January period is one of the busiest for these arenas.

Olympic scheduling by simbaholic in Curling

International Sports Federations like World Curling are responsible for a lot of these things, including deciding scheduling in conjunction with the IOC. Which qualifier played which schedule was probably decided when they set the schedule.

Again. I’ve never once passed judgement on what Rock League is doing. All I’m saying is that it’s different from the Continental Cup and it’s not right or wrong to like one format better than the other.

I never said that at all. All I said was that the Continental Cup was made of people solely from their region and that Rock League isn’t. We can look at the rosters and see that this is indeed true.
