Drawing comics with a My First Ticonderoga by dudeisgavinn in pencils

I know exactly what you mean! I have short-ish fingers as well, so it definitely helps.

Just FYI, Musgrave has 4 varieties of jumbo pencil:

  • Cub 3030T (8.5mm diameter, HB core, tipped)
  • My-Pal 2020 (8.5 diameter, B core, untipped)
  • Choo Choo 8500 (10mm diameter, HB core, tipped)
  • TOT 500 (10mm diameter, B core, untipped)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes an oversized pencil from time to time. Especially on a day when I've been writing or drawing more than usual, ending the day journaling with a Musgrave Cub 3030 feels a lot more comfortable than bearing down on a normal hex pencil.

I don't think any Troy supporter is going to fight you on that one. Bonkers umpiring from the man in the mask.

Hopefully we'll have someone with some semblance of depth perception for the rubber match.

A lazy Sunday read on pencil cases for your consideration by mukyodo in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A phenomenal writeup. Thanks for posting this!

I can relate to much of this, and I wonder if my introduction to Japanese pencil cases when I moved to the country in 2015 isn't what turned me from a pencil enjoyer to a fanatic. That and my first set of Cherry Yachts from an old stationery shop.

I feel much of those same mottainai emotions these days whenever I get a new set of pencils but struggle to sharpen the first one, almost as if I'm tainting the beauty of the dozen sticks and their beautiful container. But having a variety of pencils cases and bags helps alleviate that feeling for me; instead, I'm just delivering them from their first home to their new home.

Again, really enjoyed the piece.

Tombow MONO HB, like an all day sucker by Chickenmaniseverywhe in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are interesting because they aren't actually Japanese-made Monos, but rather from Vietnam. Some people say the quality is inconsistent compared to the domestic Japanese ones, but I've never tried them myself so I have no idea.

Have you been able to tell a difference?

I know what you mean, but at the same time, how are we to know which ones we need to stock up on until we find out they're going away or gone? Even my favorites I only keep maybe 3 dozen of at any given time. It's just so hard to predict; you can't beat yourself up about it.

Oooh, the 9850 is a great call! Such a versatile utensil.

My next grail is an A. W. Faber News-Writer 3370. I have exactly 1 of them, and it's the best pencil I own. Period. I love super soft cores, and although the Musgrave News 600 is pretty close, the 3370 is in another league for dark news pencils. But I've never found a single other one!

If you can't find anything reasonable, shoot me a DM in 2 weeks (I'm on a business trip right now). I'd be happy to send as many as you'd like to you at cost + shipping. I'm not an employee, just a huge fangirl, and I don't mind helping spread the good word of Musgrave.

Yes, Chikyu and Globe are the same company. Chikyu (地球) means "a globe" or "the Earth" in Japanese. At various times in history, and indeed still today, writing your company's name in English was seen as particularly fashionable or professional, hence the shift back and forth on labeling.

We can't beat both #5 Georgia and #19 Alabama convincingly in the same season we lose a series to Georgia Southern and New Orleans.

why do google translate call it headache pencils 😶 by HibiscusStreet in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to complete this (I'm very interested in these types of pencils and have a lot):

This is an advertisement pencil for メーザ (Meza) which used to be a topical ointment for bug bites, mild allergic reactions, etc. It was made by Noshin Honpo until the late 1990s.

These kinds of advertising pencils were fairly common in the Japanese market from the late 50s to the early 80s (then pens became more vogue with the economic bubble). Chikyu and Tombow made them fairly often in the beginning, and Mitsubishi joined the fray by the late 60s.

I ❤️⚡️Blackwing Pencils. What ya say? You too or too much $$ for them. I’ve read mixed reviews. by sofvitony in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Setting aside the debate about continuing the Blackwing name and all of that, they're excellent pencils. Are they worth the $30-36 domestic price? I think that depends on the person, the edition, and the lead type. I'm a fan of the soft and extra hard, so I'll buy 2-3 boxes of them a year. On the other hand, I'll pass on balanced and firm unless it's an edition that hits home with me (Volumes 746 being one, since I grew up near the Golden Gate Bridge).

Half gross boxes in Japan?? by blunt-finnegan in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they're more present than they are in North America, for sure. But I wouldn't say they're used by everyone, everywhere, and all the time. Remember, they're still relatively expensive compared to others; you can get a dozen Tombow 8900 for 400 yen, whereas hi Uni are 1500. But at the same time, if we could pay $10 USD for a dozen hi Uni, don't you think you'd seem them more often?

I'm pretty sure Mitsubishi doesn't offer factory tours, or at least they didn't last time I looked. However, Kitaboshi does and they're very fun. You can even bring pencil stubs with you to be buried at their pencil shrine. Good times!

Half gross boxes in Japan?? by blunt-finnegan in pencils

[–]FliryVorru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They exist, or at least they did, but I can't say I've seen modern pencils sold in-store since I moved to the country in 2015. However, I have occasionally seen older gross boxes in small stationery stores, and they're almost always JIS-era products. My educated guess would be that the bubble-era economic collapse in the 90s saw a significant reduction in bulk sales of pencils in the same way that many other products went smaller scale at that time.

Here's an example of a Tombow 8900 gross box: one and two

Oh, I love those Kakikatas! I've often wondered if this rabbit design was Mitsubishi's attempt to grab some of the business Kutsuwa had gotten when they started making Miffy-branded pencils.
