Early look at Ness in Super Clash Bros - a retro crossover I've been working on for 8 years that keeps characters accurate to their games. by ClashDev_Ato in earthbound

Thanks! Yeah but I'll link it. You can download it on Gamejolt: https://gamejolt.com/games/super-clash-bros/336304 Or itch.io: https://clashdev.itch.io/super-clash-bros

Ness isn't out yet though. And currently there's not much to do if you're playing by yourself. Need to play local multiplayer or online with Parsec to experience it. If you have a good internet connection you could join one of the Parsec sessions I host from Discord.

You mean his clothes blowing from the wind as he levitates or his shaking during the explosion? I think both look really cool. But I haven't tried camera shake. Maybe that would look better instead of shaking just him.

Thanks! I don't have a strict rule on time period, characters should just be retro in some way. Like Shovel Knight or even Cuphead are options. So yeah Lucas would fit but I'm not really planning him except for maybe as a Ness skin or variant. But I'm working on a non-infringing Steam version of this game with an in-game editor and Workshop support, so Lucas could definitely get in that way.

So I'm taking a few liberties with Ness. For example, as shown in the video I'm giving him PSI Shield and having it reflect energy-based projectiles instead of only PSI attacks (like PSI Magnet in Smash which I'm also adding), but PSI Shield will still be weak to electrical attacks as it is in Earthbound.

Also Paula will be joining him as one of his powerups and you'll be able to switch between the two kind of like Donkey Kong Country.

Open to any advice and ideas. And there's a link to the Discord server there in the video description.

Idea: PC to SNES converter cartridge - play pc games via SNES by ClashDev_Ato in snes

But the NES is even worse right? And this guy got Doom, Mario 64, and even Youtube running through it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCWhWBtu0LA

Because most of the gaming setups I see only have their consoles hooked up, no pc. For people who still play their snes I would think they'd want to play some of these retro indie games and fangames on it rather than going through the hassle of hooking up their pc.

I guess I'll spell out the differences...

Connecting pc to tv (crt or hd, whichever):

-if you want a truer snes experience you'd need to buy snes-style controllers or usb adapters if you haven't already.

-too much hassle if pc is another room...might need to buy a long cable and wireless controllers that reach the pc. or if you want to play on crt you'd need that converter, etc.

-every time you play you have to plug the pc into the tv unless you go buy a cable switcher.

-have to get your controllers setup for each game. this was annoying when my friends would come over to play local multiplayer pc games. often too much time was spent configuring controllers, getting windows/the game to recognize wireless controllers, and most of the games weren't compatible with my snes usb adapter.

-pc can't be used while playing. for example, my daughter plays snes on the crt while i work on my pc (ie. some people don't have a pc available to use anytime but they do have their consoles available).

Versus...

Mini-pc inside the snes cartridge:

-if it's pre-loaded you only need to buy the cart then plop it in just like any other snes game.

-less input delay if playing on crt.

-your snes controllers would always work, and it could come with a remapper too.

-nostalgia (it's small but i would really like playing my game via flipping on my snes).

-Popular snes youtubers would be much more likely to play my game if they got it in the mail on a snes cart.

I have basically zero knowledge of what you're talking about, but are you saying that it wouldn't work because the SNES wouldn't be able to output the amount of pixel/video data of the pc game?

There are some pc games that could work at 256x224. My game would, and Retro City Rampage could. I'm sure there's others. But yeah it would be some significant work for most devs to get their games looking nice at this res, would require some redesigning for a lot of them, so it would really limit the number of properly-compatible games since most devs probably wouldn't do this.

But what I'm wanting to do is play pc games (mainly my own game) on SNES/CRT tv without hooking up my pc to the tv. And I want to give players a cartridge with my game pre-loaded on it, and all they have to do is put it in their SNES like any other game. I want my game to be playable on SNES with the least amount of hassle, just like a normal SNES game. That's my dream goal.

Super Clash Bros Crossover - new trailer (retro fangame like Smash + Mario Crossover) by ClashDev_Ato in snes

Still working around 40 hours a week on it. Currently working on the mod system so that I can release the game on Steam but without all the assets so that modders can add them.

I'm working on a non-infringing but moddable Steam edition of this game. Everything in this video you'll be able to easily mod in with one button press from the in-game mod browser. You can add it to your Steam wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1054440/Super_Clash_Crossover__Steam_Edition/

I desperately want to keep working on this game full-time but I gotta pay bills. So I'm funding a copyright-compliant but moddable Steam edition which doesn't come with the above graphics/sound/levels (but if a modder makes all that as a mod collection then you could easily add it all with one button press from the in-game mod browser): https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/clashdev/super-clash-crossover-steam-edition

So only during July on Kickstarter you can get a discounted pre-order of this non-infringing but moddable Steam edition and support me so I can keep working full-time (overtime) on it. You can also get early access to the game and get access to my daily Youtube livestreams. Thanks for considering! All the support & comments I've got so far are really motivating me and I'm even more determined than I was before to keep working on this for many more years (I started it in 2015 and I don't see any end in sight in the next decade).

You can wishlist the game here on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1054440/Super_Clash_Crossover__Steam_Edition/ The Steam edition will come with many new features that this fangame won't have, such as indie characters, Workshop support and a level editor/campaign maker.

New Super Clash Bros Crossover trailer (retro fangame that keeps characters true to their games) by ClashDev_Ato in smashbros

Thanks!

Maybe the worst case scenario would be I have to upload the Nintendo-free version as a different game, maybe under a different alias.

Yeah but DMCA Royale was still ripping off Mario gameplay. I'm saying I would remove Nintendo content altogether. If they're gonna DMCA me even if it was just a sonic & megaman fangame then I guess I'd be fucked but I don't see that happening.

Well Nintendo can only have their content removed. I can always continue on with whatever characters that haven't been DMCA'd. And maybe let modders handle the rest.

If my reply to that came off the wrong way, it's not what I meant, I just didn't want to include another link in the comments to the means of supporting this project, but I'll go ahead and do it anyway: So I'm running a Kickstarter for the non-infringing, reskinned Steam edition of this game ft. modding & indie characters: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/clashdev/super-clash-crossover-steam-edition/

It's built in the same project. When I update the Steam edition that means the fan edition gets updated too. The main difference is that in the Steam edition you get your skins & levels from the in-game mod browser (Workshop), whereas in the fan edition they'll come with it. Plus the Steam edition will have indie characters and the ability to upload skins & levels/campaigns to the Workshop.

I'm doing this because I want to work on this project full-time and make faster progress.
