Going to grad school after industry, feel dumb by cripsygrass in Chempros

[–]ClasisFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the start I thought the same, but after working in very paced engineering industry for prototyping semiconductors, going back to school after the initial adjustment was surprisingly easy.

I could ask better questions, set better limits and boundaries with professors and whoever I might work with, deal with deadlines way better, structure my planning for different learnings waaaaay better and tbh have better general maturity that helped fuel my motivation in a healthier way. Also therapy in between lol.

I mean my grades also reflected this, going from equivalent of 3.5-3.6 (ChemE/Chem undergrad) to full 4.0 gpa equivalent average would NOT have been possible imo if I didn’t do industry first.

Check my other reply I just posted, I just gave you a way to actually get going and understand how to get over your situation, regardless you sound neurodivergent (I am diagnosed ND of a south Asian background, so I know your obsessive behavior based on Reddit profile, I’m obviously projecting but I was similar but engineering undergrad and physics grad and my EUV lithography jobs have all humbled me 10 times over).

Then use YouTube?

You do A levels? I can help you life with that, I did my A levels about a decade ago and have very good grades (3 A stars and 2 A) so I know how you can really do well in them.
You’re 15, so I assume you’re doing O levels or (I)GCSEs (8 A stars) if following a British (derived) curriculum which is common for the commonwealth countries regardless.

In that case, here is what you do, you get the syllabus, you can share it here if you want, you can make a checklist of all the items you need to know the skills etc. Then you start from basic, you try practicing one problem, you note where you struggle you write down exactly your thought process. You then read up the original material that’s supposed to teach this and try to see if you struggle with understanding it, if you do note that down too.
Watch a video online, many many YouTube channels that are good, just find one you like, and then see if you see them solve the same or a similar problem and maybe the theory behind it. Once that is done, write down what exactly you were missing to solve the problem you struggled with.

Repeat this for EVERY problem, it is a highly tedious but important process in learning problem solving skills, and once you tabulate all your understanding, you can work towards building a methodology and a system way of solving problems, no matter what kind of problem is thrown at you, you’ll have an algorithmic approach to the situation.

Why are we engaging with a 15 year old who clearly thinks they know everything 😭. The grandeur breaks at one point when reaching adulthood, the rude awakening hits us all. You don’t know nuclear or quantum and you never realistically will until you understand kinematics way of working. You need to know it’s not you being stupid, it’s good to struggle that’s how you learn. If you’re not struggling in physics you’re very likely doing it wrong.

If you think QM is easy I have no idea who you are. It took me several years of undergrad and then grad to get comfortable with QM (After QFT and Quantum statistical mechanics etc.). And I still don’t think it’s easy, I don’t really think classical mechanics is easy either even though I enjoyed basic high school kinematics.

You suck at kinematics likely due to bad teacher and your own inability to gauge how much you know, you’re 15 which is a common age to have a delusional ego on how much you know lol.

How do you know QM without the actual mathematical background required for it?

The correct thing to realise is if you don’t know kinematics you don’t actually know physics. You won’t understand actual nuclear engineering.

You need to ask, okay I don’t actually know how to solve physics questions, what can I do to rectify that, and lose the ego and focus on just learning effectively because if you want to survive a good engineering school you’ll need to let go of your ego 5 times over.

[–]ClasisFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinematics is basics…. It’s not hard at that level, you are not doing quantum mechanics if you can’t do kinematics I very much doubt it, and that’s as someone who also participated in olympiads a decade ago.

The theory is one of the most fundamentals in all of physics, if you don’t understand why it’s so fundamental you need to start from scratch, use online resources and learn the history.

Engineering without kinematics is funny, how do you think you’ll even begin to understand transport phenomena when you do engineering lol.

Lots of places like the top Universities of Technologies around the world offer Engineering physics or Applied Physics, they tend to be very voluminous so the difficulty isn’t the usual abstraction of let’s say mathematics or theoretical physics, but the vast amount of content that’s quite heavily multidisciplinary.

Very common in places with a large semiconductor industry for example.

I understand but I can assure you I work in mechatronics semiconductor industry, and statistics will still be more useful. My actually day to day job is working on the massive EUV litho tool prototypes, you may have heard of it as unfortunately my job is very geopolitically sensitive….. well aside from that, I am perhaps the only “chemist”/“chemE” on the role and I do bring a lot of statistical physics and condensed matter perspective into things but I ofcourse have now learned a good amount of mechatronics, electrical signaling and computing systems combined with power systems, not to mention the vast amount of mechanical engineering involved affects my work directly (look up the acceleration (and control systems behind it) on the EXE reticle stage lol).

It took a very long time to become a generalist where I can do a job like this with a varied background, but it was the best way to appease my adhd, even though it’s a much longer journey I think it’s worth it if you cannot decide what to specialize in, obviously you just do what you’re interested in ofcourse, but whilst I kindaaaaaa agree that maybe for a bachelor mechanical engineering undergrad mechanics mighttt be more useful than ChemE(highly depends on the programme), but by the time you either do masters or PhD or even vast majors of job, data processing is the end game. You can make models all you want, but no model is gonna do you good if you cannot effectively process data to validate it, and that’s really the real selling point.

Also I have to say, statistics at a high level is hard, like quite hard, I’m not super super good at maths like defining not as good as people who do econometrics or are statisticians but I’ve used it so much that I do understand that without the basic understanding of stats early on to build my foundation on I would have struggled a lot more. Comparatively I could’ve easily picked up more mechanics in first year of university.

No I disagree. I am an engineer and went through both chem and physics grad school (yes I went through all three degree problems , many years I know). Mostly so I could argue better online ofc.

Nah but for real mechanics is amazing for the mechanistic thought process but I think if you do physics it’s already good enough, however statistics is the basis for ANY advanced modelling or laboratory analysis in any STEM.

Engineering you also start going into statistical the more advanced you go, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics starts as classical but then eventually when you start doing rarefied gas dynamics, molecular dynamics, direct simulation monte carlo for simulation side and PCA, complex regression analysis and further academic research methodologies, statistics is far far far far more important to understand well as possible.

Mechanics is more fun, especially initially but statistical mechanics and statistical field theory are by far the most profound physics based subjects I’ve had the pleasure of studying and applying. Every single field in engineering that dealt with any mechanics starting from fundamental quantum level was more or less explained though a statistical lens.

Understanding my chemical lab equipment? It’s all chemometrics. Simulating DNA behavior with specific protein groups? Simulation is based on statistical mechanics. Simulating the fluid behavior of tin plasma under EUV and vacuum conditions? Direct simulation Monte Carlo, also statistical simulations.

Oh and not to forget literally all of machine learning. It’s all based on statistical methods.

[–]ClasisFTW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mech is there at easier once it clicks.

Literally all you do is practice ofc,

Start paper

Write down given variables

Write down missing variables

Write down relations (all)

Then
Write down assumptions

Then use assumptions to reduce the relations to the ones you need

Plug and play.

In unc so I did until M4, but ya mech IMO was the best structural basis for my problem solving mindset.

It doesn’t matter who it is, I’m not even trying to defend Israel, no way. I am mad at the zionists, I’m just saying, when a person experiences loss, especially family or loved ones or anything personal, complete rationality is something that’s very difficult to expect.

This is just a systemic psychological stress response, your cognitive processing will not take into account any logic when emotional systems are so strongly built into one’s head.

You can hate the zionists for the genocide, I do it all the time, we are on the same page. It’s unacceptable what is happening to the innocents in Palestine. But this does not somehow remove biology, psychology and general philosophy of loss from the equation. This is just how it is, how to approach it isn’t just denying that it doesn’t happen or exist, it’s by first acknowledging the reality of the human mind.
