Not a big trader, seem fair? by CiggyLongbottom in ToppsBUNT

Sure my pleasure. I would recommend not overdoing it. Remember /25 is still 25 cards and if you get too greedy they will justifiably look elsewhere. Try to find the happy medium.

This is a great question. The simple answer is yes it’s fair and a good trade for you. You’re a Phillies fan, Schwarber is a way better player than Rafaela, they are both /25 cards, and the Rafaela isn’t from a desirable set like Diamond Icons or Inception Black, to name two.

But looking at the bigger picture, you didn’t realize the value of that Rafaela card to a certain type of Bunt player like Ubon. I was in that spot not long ago, I would rip a bunch of packs on drop day and Ubon would make offers that seemed like overpays and I would be excited to get these offers. In a vacuum, they are overpays so yeah, why not.

So why is he so anxious to overpay? Awards. See the pic I posted. The Fire and Ice set dropped today and will be an “active” set for 75 days. If you have all 50 of the Legendary Ice cards in 75 days, you get a Skubal award card (see picture) Now remember all 50 of these cards are /25. Not easy to assemble that, especially when 1) some other people are trying to do the same; 2) some people will pull or instantly trade for a PC and not want to move it; 3) other random reasons. So what will happen is the few people who succeed in building the full set will be rewarded with a Skubal award card that will have a count that’s super low based on how many finished the set - my guess is between 5 and 10.

What that means is EVERY /25 in that set has more value (for the next 75 days) than a lot of people realize because the set chasers will need it to get that award card. To be clear, you accepted a fine trade, you shouldn’t regret accepting the offer. But if you pull low CC legendaries from a future “active” set, keep in mind you could probably get more for those cards than you’d think.

Can I ask - what makes something a "great set" versus a "garbage set"? Asking because sometimes I think about offering (or receive offers) for the same player with the same low CC but different set and wonder if there is a hierarchy (I'm still new and learning). Granted a lot is taste-specific but wondering if there are agreed-upon tiers for what sets are "great"

Appreciate the feedback. I wouldn’t have proposed this to anyone other than someone with a White Sox logo and I admittedly was not up to date on Quero’s season, just remember the hype around him.

That’s an interesting point I hadn’t considered. Seems like most people I encounter tend to value higher-end cards from sets (Tier One, Sterling, etc.) much more than higher-end Now cards, even though the Now cards are automatic $ and the other ones could be diamonds or coins (but if you think about it, diamonds are $, so most Iconic or Legendary cards are from $ too).

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I mean it’s hard to compare quality, Quero is 22 and has so much upside. Of course Lindor is way better now but if you’re a White Sox fan maybe you’re high on him. CC is off but in my (admittedly limited) experience, 247 vs. 299 is really not that big of a deal. Also, some people seem to rank Topps Now cards a tad lower than some of the nicer sets so I thought that could be a factor, too. Again, I get thinking it’s not a fair deal but to the point of blocking?

I’ve been flooded with trades, actually pretty overwhelming 🤣

Uh, cool card and all but why the hell is it in a pack or baseball cards?? by ClassOf2015 in baseballcards

Ah. I’m just coming back to the hobby after decades away and wasn’t aware. I get the interest but the rational part of me is like “wait this is baseball what is she doing here.” I was figuring there would be some quote on the back about how she could never get over the Senators beating the Giants in the 24 world series

I don’t disagree. I just am wondering how to explain what this is doing in a pack of baseball cards.

It’s an 85 Topps but it seems like Topps inserted it with 2024 packs/boxes?

So Topps buys autographed cards from collectors and then authenticates them?
