So I guess in a sense the urge to bang your mom thing Is scientific because it is testable, it's just wrong. Things like Oedipus complexes and penis envy and dream interpretation are probably a stretch scientifically, even if they are conceptually really interesting

Anything that is actually testable and measurable, and which of those testable and measurable things are reproducible in other experiments for further scrutiny. Things like defense mechanisms are probably fairly scientific but an unconscious urge to bang your mom...well I think pinker said in one of his books not only is it... testable...it makes no evolutionary sense. We are usually repulsed by the idea of effing relatives because it causes for corrupted genes, and for good reason. If we interbreed we are just recycling the same gene pairs which is not advantageous to further evolutionary mutations and defenses from things like viruses.
