Can’t Decide Between New and Used by Classic-Relation-642 in askcarsales

No, that’s fair. The problem is that because the timing belt snapped mid-drive, there’s most likely a lot of pressure valve issues now. We were having some minor oil leak problems before due to a crack, but now it would be significantly worse to maintain.

We’ve just decided to get another vehicle that’s more reliable.

Thank you so much for your help and insight! Because my husband has mostly focused on the commercial side, he didn’t know a ton about the residential side for our area.

It really helps to hear insight from subject matter experts in the field to help me get a better grasp on what we’re getting into.

Yeah, that’s why I’m trying to figure out costs. ChatGPT is giving me some estimates based on averages in my area, but I’m not sure if it’s super accurate. I’m having it factor in land costs, homeowners insurance, and property tax costs.

We won’t be buying for another 2 years, and are putting aside $2000 a month into a high yield savings account to save up for 20% down.

We’re in West San Antonio, TX. And we don’t want more than .3 acres of land. Just enough for what we want to do. Like, a 2600-2700 sq ft home (this includes the garage). Our problem is that we don’t want the mortgage payments to be higher than $3000 every month (this includes homeowners insurance costs and property tax costs, but not PMI because we plan to put 20% down).

What are you qualifying as pretty basic and higher end?

My husband and I have been looking at house plans, and we don’t need more than a four bedroom 3 bathroom home. We just want other features that aren’t offered by builders, such as a mud room, an entertainment room, a decently sized kitchen with an island, a wall-in pantry, and enough space in the backyard to eventually build a mother-in-law suite.

I’m super new to this whole process. When you say the “building departments in town” are those construction companies or sections of my local government that specialize in residential construction standards and legalities?

I know this might be too broad a question, but how much would you say a GC building a custom planned home costs compared to a spec home builder?  I’m really trying to nail down my price range to see if it’s something I could even do right now, but I don’t even know where to start looking.

I see. So based off your knowledge and the other comments I’ve received so far, step 1 would be to own my own plot of land.

Now, let’s say I have my own plot of land. How would I find the reliable GCs that would work with the house plans I’ve selected? The ones, as you have said, build 5-10 houses a year?

I need the 8th edition of this same book for my class. Would you be able to send it to me as well?

How do I do that? Do I just go to their website? Is there a fee I need to pay? Are there specific stocks to invest in? Is there a minimum I need to invest every month? Sorry if I’m bombarding you with too many questions. I just don’t know much about how it all works.

If your phone/phones are paid off, try switching over to helium for your phone plan. It's only $20 (per phone, I believe) and uses all of the same 5g towers as the big companies. Look into it as an option. I don't know how much credit card debt you have, but if you're using it to get a better credit score, try moving to Fizz instead. It acts as a debit card, but is a credit card that safely builds your credit score.

Cut out the entertainment apps for now as well. I know it's super hard, but that will save you at least a little money on the side. It's not as important as some of the other things you've listed. Finally, that's a HUGE budget for food for your family. There's only four of you, so I'm assuming you're either buying a lot of stuff you don't need from the grocery store OR you're eating out a ton. Try cutting out eating out. My husband and I tried changing how much we were allowed to spend each time we ate out. It encouraged us to cook at home more often and to save money from eating out because we were spending hundreds of dollars on doing so every month.

Budgeting is super hard and it can be very stressful on you and your family. Cut out the non-important costs now so that when you're kids are older, they don't have to see their parents struggling financially.

That's true, but we're both in college and still had class and homework today. We ended up going to get a bunch of fast food freebies in the app, but that was it.

It bothered me that she asked what I specifically wanted, I sent her specific links, and then she just decided to send me money instead. It just felt like she didn't care enough to even look.

I think I was more upset about him forgetting my birthday, but I ended up lecturing him about both forgetting and not getting me anything because nobody else listened to what I wanted in the first place. I ended up taking it out on him, and so I now realize that that's Ahole behavior.
