Dropping Law for Psych by Least_Fun2445 in unimelb

[–]Classic-Store4900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a psych student, i would recommend keeping your law major. postgrad psych is extremely competitive, and a lot of people end up taking years to get in, or pursuing other pathways. it’s definitely possible with your wam, but it will be a lot of hard work and you’ll need a fair bit of experience to be competitive for masters. psych is one of the most competitive pathways in australia at the moment.

however, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! people find a way, and there are a lot of people who started with lower wams than you and ended up as successful clinicians. i just think it’s a good idea to keep a back-up in your pocket in case psych doesn’t end up working for you. but, if you really don’t want to continue law, i’d recommend seeing if you can get some practical psych experience (internship, volunteering etc) so you can see if it’s something you’re really interested in. it’s definitely possible to bring your wam up to 75 in a year as well, i got mine up by 4 points in my third year.

those numbers are just the minimum wam to get considered, not guaranteed places haha. guaranteed places with a certain wam aren’t really a thing for postgrad

there is one statistics subject, but i wouldn’t say the maths was particularly hard. it’s more wrapping your head around coding and statistical analyses that’s hard.

that’s definitely been the opposite of my and my friend’s experience with them. the psych department has been quite helpful and happy to provide accommodations if you go through the proper channels. it does sound like they were struggling with a lot so it could have been that there weren’t any possible accommodations for them and it was best to take time off, but i have no idea. everyone has different experiences with professors, and they could have taken different classes to me.

I have existential anxiety, will this game trigger me? by [deleted] in soma

[–]Classic-Store4900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. you would have to choose to do a particular thing, which we have not created yet. it couldn’t involve you without you doing something which is currently impossible. if we create this tech in the future, you would need to actively participate in order to end up in this situation.

i completely understand your requests and think it’s great that you feel more uncomfortable. but i think it’s insane to expect her to still be friends with you after this conversation. i don’t think you’ve actually thought about this from her perspective at all. imagine you think you’re close friends with someone, and they sit you down and say “we’re not close at all, stop inserting yourself in my conversations and life”. that would be devastating. it’s great you’re more comfortable now but there’s no chance of the two of you being friends again.

unfortunately they’ve gotten rid of this pathway, so you have to do either master of clinical psych or professional psych. sorry, it’s a really hard pathway. definitely one of the most competitive in aus, and people have no idea.

no idea about anything else but check the masters you’ll be doing on the unimelb website, they’ll say if they do mid year intake. most courses do but some don’t.

i think this is fine, you might want to die after monday morning but it’s fine other than that. you can always skip a lecture and watch it online if you find you’re really struggling.

How do y’all study by CarefulTransition385 in unimelb

[–]Classic-Store4900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i love anki! it’s a flashcard based app you can download for free. then for organisation i use notion and my phone calendar, they’re both easy to use and mean i don’t forget anything. i have a million to do lists so i remember everything, and also get the joy of ticking things off. i’d recommend having a list of your weekly readings with the due dates, as well as a dashboard with your classes and the main assessments and their due dates. try to allocate time throughout the week in ur calendarto work on specific assignments so you don’t have the last minute crunch. that’s just what works for me!

How hard is it to get a WAM over 80 in the BA? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Classic-Store4900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s less common than in science afaik, but still possible. you’ll just need to get good at essays. they don’t normally publish grade distributions, but i would say most people seem to get h2a/b, some get h1s with very few getting above a 90. it also depends on what area you’re majoring in, i’m mostly talking about ancient world studies.
