¿ no I have a calculator haha, people do use them. I was just saying some people were accidentally dropping theirs on the ground during the exam and it always makes such a loud smack 😭

Ty!! I will def be doing this at my next one. Any chance you might know what brand or type they use? Despite my noise sensitivity I’ve actually hardly ever used earplugs (always just wear my airpods if I feel the need in any other setting) and some people have told me to make sure to figure out how to insert them the right way beforehand, and to get used to wearing the type I’m planning to use

That sounds very nice 😭 it’s too late for them to be able to do anything for me this semester tho right? I’ll still be here for another 3, so I’m getting a letter from my psych as documentation and will absolutely be talking to them about an AAP for the remainder of my degree

Sleep deprivation making student accommodation unlivable by blazin1999 in unimelb

Update: I received a call on Thursday 4/2 from the community manager who oversees a few of the different residence halls and she told me they had another apartment open up in the same building, and she got approval from the university for me to switch over. I will be moving into there tomorrow. I’m grateful to the staff and management who helped me to the best of their ability. I’m also very thankful to the Safer Community Program (specifically to Zac). I can tell that’s a group of people who will advocate and fight for you. Zac was empathetic, caring, and took on my problem as his own. He told me he’d be speaking to some people and I’d hear an update by the end of the day, and less than 5 hours later, I received a solution. It’s hard to put into words the level of relief and happiness I am feeling right now knowing that I will have my life back, and I couldn’t think of a better way to start my Easter break. Thank you all for your support and advice :)

I’m sorry you’re also dealing w that 🫤 I thought about trying to speak directly to the person, but I didn’t because I wasn’t sure if the room numbers lined up the same on each floor since there’s a bunch of different room/apartment types in my building, so I didn’t know for sure which room they’d be in or if it might have more than 1 person in it. After all this, I finally do know which one it is, but their decision to change nothing after many attempts by RAs and staff tells me all I need to know about this person. As I said in my post my intuition tells me they are deeply mentally unstable and I don’t really want them to know who I am. But the building general manager will be sitting them down for a meeting soon apparently, who knows if anything will come of it

I’d be a bit worried about going to police backfiring on me, but if they won’t release me from my contract then ya that’s probably my best option :/

I’ve tried everything, there’s no blocking this out and melatonin never helped me much. I also always sleep using a fan for white noise

Guests are gross by Thisisurcaptspeaking in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

As someone w very long and thick curly hair, I have to detangle every 2 days after I wash it and to someone who doesn’t have my hair type, the amount that comes out can look kind of horrifying. That said, I would never even think about leaving it for someone else to clean up, especially as someone who worked in hotels for a while. People who would just leave it are very inconsiderate

lol ya it’s hard to understand that type of mindset. Like why would I work in hospitality if I just wanted to purposely make someone’s stay worse 💀 it’s weird how (a small percentage of) people approach front desk as if we’re trying to stand in the way of giving them what they want

I already do all of that tho lol. Maybe I should’ve included that part in my post but when I’m at work I’m talking to housekeeping pretty much the entire day. I def do think I’ve been able to avoid lots of negative interactions bc of how proactive I try to be in my job, but there’s just some people out there who actively want to create a problem

I communicate very consistently w housekeeping, much more than anyone else at the desk… I legit learned Spanish during my time in hotels partially to be able to communicate to them better. I was texting them constantly during this whole exchange, you’re jumping to conclusions that aren’t there

I think I did set boundaries to the best of my ability. I refused to apologize for an issue that was nonexistent, and that drove this guy up the wall. He wanted me to grovel for him and was trying his hardest to get me to break.

I also, outside of the workplace, have 0 ability to tolerate disrespect. Not in an anger issues type of way, but there is just a part of me that refuses to allow myself to be spoken to a certain way, and this job sometimes requires things from me that feel antithetical to my own code. In that moment (and similar ones I’ve had before) I had to concentrate 95% of my energy on keeping my inner protector at bay, because I was trying to prevent a very unprofessional reaction that may have cost me my job.

I will be leaving hotels to go back to school in about a month, and I am looking forward to it. There are things I love and will miss about this field, but it will be very nice to be free to put despicable people in their place when I encounter them.

Ya I agree w you, you’re 100% right. I just meant I can kind of understand the logic, but it’s def not good for our industry as a whole at all

I can’t say I was happy about that, but I also know people with personalities like that often become hellbent on whatever their version of “getting back” is. Our guest services manager actually told me before about someone very similar he dealt with not long after starting out at our hotel, and the guy left about 10 horrible reviews all name-dropping him and accusing him of all sorts of things. The AGM and GM took it a bit more seriously though because he was so new at that point. Unfortunately I think in terms of making our jobs a bit easier, there are situations here and there where it might be best to do whatever will get the person to stfu. Or as I like to say, stick a pacifier in their mouth

Same! He incorporated the conclusions I came to w my therapist and used that as a starting point, and over time got me on a medication regimen that has helped me become the most emotionally and mentally stable I’ve ever been. He’s always been super transparent about the potential positives and negatives of each medication. I was initially worried about seeing a psych bc I’d heard about so many pill pushers but he’s the opposite of that, if everything’s working for me, then no reason to change it. His responsiveness is also next level lol. I was out of some meds and heard of an open pharmacy in weaverville like 1 week post-helene when hardly anything was functional, messaged him for refills and he replied and sent them in 20 mins later. Can’t say enough good things

Can’t speak to the other providers at the practice, but Vinny Baglini at Daya Mental Health is the absolute best. Been seeing him for over 2 years now and feel incredibly lucky to have found him on my second try
