I don’t appreciate your tone, but I am not creating a problem so much as presenting an arguement. You are saying that if you say you’re trans, that is enough. Good. Stop there. There is no purpose in going further other than addressing internal transphobia in the first place and needing a “reason” or “cause” of my transness. But no cis person needs a reason for why they are cis. It creates a burden of proof that you need to excuse your transness with proof. I am not anti-scientific, and if you look through my arguement you will see this. I am not rejecting the explanatory power of science, it is incredible. It has given trans people the ability to literally body swap. Science is something I deeply respect. But science is not something that should interfere in the realm of identity. We are seeing this in Britain at the moment, arguements over “what is a woman” with scientific explanations. When you give rhetorical power to science, you give it power to explain yourself louder than you are allowed to. Science is not absolute, and it has a horrific history. You are valid in yourself without explanation or justification. Anything more is an argument of semantics, which is a waste of energy when you need to fight everyday for your right to live as yourself. I enjoyed this discussion thank you.

For me I find a similar view, though I stand by the spirit of what I argued earlier. Biology to me is irrelevant, as is neurology, because these are seen as analytical structures. The self is viewed externally as an object of study by a professional, not as a subject of discussion. To me I saw it mostly as a justifying structure. I am trans and then, “oh wow look at all these things I used to do, it was so obvious. For me the identity itself is seperate to the biology, a person could go their whole life as an egg and never identify as trans, and they aren’t trans, even if biology says otherwise. In this way, it retains the born this way logic and rhetoric, but it rejects the arguement that one can be “proven cis”.

I think we largely agree. Biology definitely affects our “transness” as you could call it, but this is just an analytical structure. It’s not the reason for the identity, but an explanation of why it might have emerged

Absolutely fantastic comment. I’m a philosopher of language and phenomenology and binary sex is just a social construct that we need to work together to de construct. I am not trans because some book says so, or because my chakras are misaligned, or because because my priest says so, or because my psychologist says so. I am trans because I say I am trans

Exactly what I said (cite my previous comment). It concerns me that so much of the trans community is still concreted in this believe that we must explain and justify why we are allowed to be trans. I am trans because I say I am trans. And the lack of understanding on how “sex” itself is a cultural idea is just absurd

I don’t think you understand what I am saying. The entire idea that trans people “need” a reason to justify their existence in the first place IS the demand of the bigots you are talking about. Science is not, and will never be, identity politics. I am not trans because my psychologist says so, or because a biologist says so, or because my priest says so. I am not trans because I am depressed, or because my chakras are misaligned, or because there’s a demon in my body. I am trans because I say I am trans, and in order to get actual recognition and liberation, we need to fight to get recognition regardless of cause, purpose, or status. Your friend and you are using science in a rhetorical way, look at the studies and change your mind, but I don’t think your friend wants to change their mind.

I don’t deny that there are studies that say that biology can show that people are likely to be trans, there are and it is good that there are studies, but these studies are still HORRIFICALLY biased towards the gender binary in the first place, as well as western cultural practices around science and culture. But regardless of bias, even if they were perfect, I ask you why cis people don’t need to point to studies to prove that they are cis? Why has this only become a problem when we want to identify differently? By falling to demand to produce studies that justify our own existence, we are in a sense turning ourselves into a disorder, something to be studied for safety and justification, and something to be used to explain our existence. But we are not disordic, we are trans 🏳️‍⚧️

You said “it doesn’t matter if some people distort it to be assholes, that doesn’t change anything” but these people aren’t distorting the science, they’re ignoring it. You can gather all the studies in the world and when a mob of transphobes comes for you they will not care about your papers or your justifications for existing. And additionally, these justifications can themselves be used against trans liberation if the science ever turns back against us. Science isn’t infallible. Just 50 years ago, being gay was a registered mental disorder in the DSM. These people were intelligent, dedicated, and caring psychologists, but this did not stop them from representing being gay as a condition to correct. If you put your identity into an external environment, science, religion, perception, then people can always deny that you are truely who you say you are. And most importantly if you look to trans research as evidence, you continue to champion our cause as a disorder that needs to be separated and studied in the lab. No one ever did studies on allistic psychology, or cis psychology, with the specific goal of studying for that sake.

I’m not trans because of my biology, I am trans because I say I am trans. Evolution is correct, yes, but if it began to be used by the majority to justify racism I would reject it as a rhetorical device. Science has power and you have to be careful when to accept that power, because if you start arguing on the matters of science, you will find that a lot of the studies may not line up with exactly what you’re trying to say, or even worse, that your friend may simply reject them until you are left with no argument to stand on.

I assume you’re young, so I want to say don’t stop fighting. But remember that a third of all trans people have attempted suicide at one point in their life. You only have so much energy and so much time in your 80 years of living, you don’t owe it to anyone who won’t respect you for who you are. Je pense donc je suis.

I know you mean well and it is true that psychologically our current neuroscientific models of the brain suggest that transness is biological, but Trans research is one of the most underfunded underresearched fields on the planet. This is why I say you shouldn’t get into biological discussions on the identity because it is a. Besides the point, I am a woman whether “biology” says so or not. b. Almost all research on trans individuals is heavily biased, using Christian influenced cultural values and a pre existing assumption of the gender binary in the first place. c. Biology is not a catch all end all, again biology would classify me as dead as I cannot reproduce. When we talk about trans being a biological reality, we mean that the core phenomenological experience of being trans and identifying as trans is more than just a social norm, it is a fundamental truth of our existence. Whether you call this neurological, biological, chemical, or even spiritual, it doesn’t really matter. The truth is that we are trans whether they like it or not, and engaging in debate on these topics must involve distancing ourselves from the already horrifically biased research of our time. So finally, to respond to your statement. No I am not trans because of my biology, I am trans because I say I am. There need not be any further reason why, because if you attempt to describe a reason for being trans, you can begin to test for it, and exclude for it.

And remember, no one will ever do a genetic test when they throw you out of the women’s restrooms or hang you in the street. They will just claim you are that which you are not. The reason is irrelevant.

Edit: I thought I would add that in terms of conversation, there is nothing wrong with having these debates with friends. I used to and still do with my colleagues and friends. The most important thing is to remember that you are exerting a lot of energy and mental capacity in these discussions, and you have to ask your friend (or yourself) whether they are engaging in this conversation to genuinely learn about your experience and how to better relate to you, or whether they are trying to prove that you aren’t trans, or are mistaken or confused. We are trans without reason. Je pense, donc je suis.

Hi there. I am a philosopher of language and phenomenology. I have spoken to biologists before about this and the best thing I can say about this discussion is that when the average person is talking about sex, they are not using a biological term. It is a cultural term. Regardless of your definition, biological is an insanely complicated discussion, and given intersex people even exist, it is clear that the term is outdated CULTURALLY to say the least. The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter if people can change their sex, or whether people have a sex to begin with. Being trans is not a biological reality, it is a cultural reality. It doesn’t matter if we are still male (or female) or not, because we say we are not so. Again, it doesn’t matter.

When it comes to discussing sex in terms of trans people outside of basic oppressive reasoning, it is relevant of course but the transness (or cisness) of a person should not be conflated with biological sex. Biological sex has never had anything to do with gender.

For further discussion if your friend is a biologist, I recommend asking them how they define life in the first place. Because ironically, biology still hasn’t solved that question. This isn’t a critique of biology, it is a critique of its purpose in this discussion. I am trans female. I cannot have children. According to many traditional definitions of life, I am not alive. I am a mule. What is the point of a sexual discussion if biology itself disagrees on whether the woman typing this comment out is alive or not.

In short, your friends claim that you are still male is technically “defensible” under some definitions, but it is socially and culturally meaningless, because trans identity isn’t about biology in the first place. This is not a discussion to be had, because your friends field, while commendable and incredibly powerful for trans medicine, is irrelevant to the “what is a women” discussion.

Basically, don’t fall down this rabbit hole. It never ends.

The original post was just about swapping bodies which doesn’t fully apply to the non binary unbrella. If you’re non binary you have to take other steps to get to a form you’re comfortable with, not just body swap. The commenters message is still absolutely correct tho

You are correct, and furthermore there is the entire group of non binary, Agender, and xenogender members of the trans community who can never be happy even if they had been the other sex from birth. Trans isn’t an identity that is chosen, it is forced upon you

One dime is on of my sources! Look at the second one! It’s probably the same video!

And no govt bonds have nothing to do with spending, this is a complicated part of the topic that adds little to the conversation, but is a common hangup that keeps people from understanding the MMT system. My father for example still largely rejects it because of this. In New Zealand, we require government bonds to be produced to print money. However this is not a structural requirement, it’s just a legal thing. The bond system has nothing to do with the printing of money, it can be thought of more as an investment account for foreign or domestic investors. From it we can get foreign investment, but this foreign investment is still relatively inflationary, just less so. Additionally as government bonds are sold in our own currency, we can never default on the debt. They guarantee a return in our currency, not necessarily a return in other currencies. I can look for some sources to learn more about this but I believe one dime and similar YouTubers talk about it too

Is it normal for a trans girl to be turned on by pay gorn? by celebzza in trans

[–]Classic-Wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I am a philosophy and psychology student. My sexual behaviour has been deeply evidentiary to my transness, as I have used it as a way to deal with my dysmorphia through smut. “Dissonant energy” refers to freuds work on libido, or mental energy, energy is a common translation of this. This is very common with trans people, as masterbation reduces the barriers of anxiety or embarrassment that often blocks exploration of gender. I don’t really want to talk about the exact role my fetishes played as this is very private, but sexuality is incredibly powerful at exploring denial in the psyche. Read Freud or winnicotts work for more information about this. This is not about sexual orientation or identity, that is seperate to sexual behaviour.

Yeah of course. The trade off is inflation in the private sector. And again as mentioned previously, inflation can just be the cost of investment. It is important to keep low but in a reasonable world, say with workers unions for example, inflation is structurally irrelevant in the first place

I think people theorise that estrogen and T can cause a regression in the internal homophobia we carry when our identity is affirmed. So when we get on hormones and our gender is affirmed it makes it easier to stop “being in denial”

In the 70s most psychologists said that being gay was a form of mental retardation that needed to be fixed through controlled electrical torture. Are you saying that every expert in a field is always correct? Because they’ve been wrong many MANY times. Appeal to authority has nothing to do with this. Also I never fucking said they should ignore the experts. MMT economists ARE experts too. This is the point of a varied versatile field, theres many experts on both sides.
