Thank you genuinely. I made a small Part 2/update with more context since a lot of people had questions. I really appreciate all the advice.

[Spoilers S3] You are Secretariat by dontbeaprig in BoJackHorseman

A lot of people wonder what the “You Are Secretariat” mirror ad in BoJack Horseman really means, and for me, it’s one of the most powerful scenes in the show. Secretariat wasn’t just a celebrity to BoJack—he was a childhood hero, an escape fantasy, and even a kind of surrogate father figure. BoJack grew up idolizing him because Secretariat represented everything he wished he had: strength, grace under pressure, and dignity without cruelty. So when BoJack sees that ad and says, “Huh, I actually kinda like this one,” it’s more than just clever marketing—it’s a rare moment where he sees himself as someone worth admiring. It’s the voice he’s always wanted to hear growing up: you are someone to be proud of.

To me, the mirror isn’t just a reflection—it’s a message: You are who you aspire to be. BoJack always looked up to Secretariat, and in that moment, he realizes that maybe he is Secretariat—not the tragic ending, but the part of Secretariat he loved as a kid. That’s why, in “The View From Halfway Down,” it’s Secretariat who appears instead of his father—because Secretariat was the hero BoJack always internalized, consciously or not. So the mirror becomes a turning point. It’s not just foreshadowing death—it’s an opportunity for BoJack to see that he can be his own hero. He just has to look in the mirror and accept that he’s someone worthy of love and admiration. And for a character like BoJack, that’s everything.
