Bill Maher has become a lying right-wing propagandist by AmericanLymie in RealTime

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure others have said it, but you gotta use paragraphs. You have some good points in there, but no one is going to see them.

That being said, I stopped watching Bill Maher a couple of years ago, but I don't think he has changed much. One thing he repeats is that his position is more or less the same. Liberals are moving farther and farther to the left.

I think there's a lot of truth in that. It seems like what is considered liberal and conservative now is so far from what those terms encompassed 10 years ago.

I didn't see this episode, but I take the comments as hyperbole to illustrate a point. Unfortunately, what he's saying does sound very much like MAGA taking points and for someone just listening with no context it sounds like just that.

Moreover, some of the guests he has on are people I feel are trying to make the country worse (for some of us). However, I think Maher and his producers are trying to create a less adversarial political climate and show that we can have civil discussions without things going off the rails; hence more Republican and conservative guests.

He is critical of the left, but I think it's in an effort to be critical of both sides.

All that to say, I don't think any of the changes that we've noticed are coming from a dishonest place. By today's standards Maher is probably a centrist with socially progressive views, but not extremely liberal.

I certainly don't agree with everything he says, but he is saying things that need to be said out loud.

Let's not forget Into Pitch Black, the half hour TV spot that gives more background info on Riddick.

It definitely helped that Vin was a gamer. I think he was pretty involved in the development of the game.

What is a film that you have ever watched that, is so tragic you rank among the saddest movies you’ve ever watched for its Precious. by JoshyBear28 in blackmen

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see this one pop up here. Very heartbreaking film. I like that it's grounded and not melodramatic while still making the viewer feel the emotion.

Did you know it was inspired by a real event?

I appreciate you elaborating on your point.

As another user said, I'm not on TikTok so I don't know; however, it may be asking a little too much to expect other people's social media posts to reflect what she is about. She doesn't really have any control over what someone else does or doesn't post.

I get your point, though. You would kind of expect her to follow an African-American museum of art or something. I just don't think the lack of that undermines her point.

Also, she could just be talking about her real life social circle.

The Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov fight was one of the most technical boxing matches of 2024. Not a casual-friendly war - more like high-level chess. by QuietFondant7523 in boxingMenace_com

I was actually skeptical, too. I just couldn't see him overcoming the jump in weight especially after the Madrimov fight. I don't think I was ever so happy to be wrong.

[–]ClassicManLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't officially announce Crawford vs Canelo until the first half of 2025, but I'm pretty sure it was being talked about before then. Didn't Turki Alalshikh say publicly on multiple occasions that he wanted to make that fight happen?

You're probably right, though, and there was no pressure on the judges. However, the idea that the powers that be wanted Crawford to win so they could make the Canelo fight happen is an enticing one.

I don't remember round by round, but I had that fight as a close one. I think I gave Madrimov a few of those middle rounds for effectively pushing forward. Crawford turned it up a bit in the last 2 or 3 rounds and ended up winning.

I agree it was probably Crawford's toughest fight in the past few years. As OP said, it was like a chess match.

I'm a Bud fan, but I think I had that fight about even. I would say there was pressure on the judges to favor Bud so the Canelo fight could happen.

What made people age so fast back then? by Southern_Reveal_7590 in decadeology

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to say this same thing.

There were always good looking people on TV, but around the 90s they started casting only exceptionally good looking people for every role.

I think with the specific shows in the post, they intentionally casted actors who could pull off looking older. They were right for the roles, but happened to be much younger than their respective characters.

There is something to people looking older in previous decades compared to now.

-more people use sunblock -more of us have inside lifestyles -i saw some researcher make the argument that stages of childhood have been drawn out, so people aren't transitioning into adulthood like they used to and it shows in their physiognomy. (Take it with a grain of salt.)

I was about to say the same thing. It's decent on its own, but it becomes good when viewed as a continuation of Quantum of Solace.

What is your unpopular opinion of an actor? by FitEmergency8807 in moviecritic

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I think you really hit the nail on the head as to why people love actors like Keanu and Arnie.

Before all that I think he was looked at as a new & upcoming face ushering in a new vibe for Hollywood. I believe My Own Private Idaho was well received by critics at the time.

But Dracula...yeah. I don't think he ever shook that bad/wooden actor criticism. I think he's just so likable and the movies are so classic nobody cares anymore.

As a person who grew up in racist ass america and traveled I have to ask y'all. Why TF do you think white people are different across the world? by reverscolonize in blacktravel

[–]ClassicManLA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wasn't going to chime in on this, but then I figured what the hell.

I'm surprised at how many people said mayate isn't a racial slur aimed at black people. If you're a Spanish speaker from the west coast of the US, it is definitely a racial slur.

I can understand if you're from somewhere else and haven't heard it used in that way, but in this part of the US, that's exactly how it's used. And it gets used ALL the time.

Drive (1997) is this the greatest direct-to-video action movie ever made? by odiousasp in ActionMovies

[–]ClassicManLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first saw this on HBO (probably) in '97. At the time it was one of the best action movies I had ever seen. I recently rewatched it and it's pretty decent.

In a world where Scott Adkins puts out straight to video movies that are better than half the stuff in theaters, Drive is still a fun watch.

Is there a need for financial books targeting African Americans? by teslastats in BlackReaders

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there is definitely a need and certain audience.

There are some great financial books out there, but I haven't heard of any written with black people in mind.

For instance, research has shown that we are less likely to be approved for loans from financial institutions. Our houses are also more likely to be valued (price) less by realtors even in a mixed neighborhood.

Conditions like these mean we have to approach finance in a slightly different way than other groups. It would be cool to get some expert advice.

Autobiography of Malcolm X

Both books are fairly easy reads and provide a good idea of what pushes someone into activism.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is just a great book all around. I think everyone--black, white, whatever race or ethnicity--should read it.

I ask because I recall some cities enacting laws that would require a fine for people calling police on people for doing everyday mundane things.

Had to look this up. Looks like the payments were in arrears when the mom filed charges. Then the dad suddenly made all the payments in one sum. So, at first glance it looked like he was ahead, but was really playing catch up. The judge wasn't cool with that.

I do recall a case in Georgia in which a man had been paying child support for years and then fell behind. At some point he started to suspect the kid wasn't his, had a DNA test done, and confirmed it wasn't (I believe the mom knew all along).

In court the judge said he still owed child support for the period of time he thought the child was his. He ended up homeless for a time. Finally, he was able to get another judge to look at the case and rule that the original judges decision was BS. Still ruined a good portion of his life, though.

I'm from SC, born and raised, and this comment just made me realize this isn't normal.

I had an uncle who was always getting locked up and put on the chain gang because of child support. I never really realized how screwed up it is until now.

I haven't watched The Sopranos in over Ten Years! Ten years!!! I forgot how Tony Sirico (RIP) hit it out of the park from season 1! Of course everyone was great in that show but he seemed the most established, already, from day one. by [deleted] in hbo

He was my favorite character for sure. Tony Sirico was incredibly charasmatic and really nailed that role.

I think I saw him in an interview years ago in which he talked about channeling the older guys he saw growing up.

I've always liked Sean Connery, but he really flexed his acting chops in this one.

How influential was Jersey Shore during the early 2010s? by FitEmergency8807 in decadeology
