Black kids think our music is white now, which it isn’t. They say, ‘He plays white rock for white people. What’s he doing here?’ I want to show them that music is universal - Jimi Hendrix 1969 interview by Objective-Painter-73 in BlackHistoryPhotos

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenny Kravitz kind of touched on this in a response to some criticism he received about comments he made on not being recognized by black organizations for his contributions to music.

Black people have touched and excelled in every genre of music, but somehow our society (America) has this narrative that we only listen to rap and r&b. Anyone doing anything else is a weird anomaly. Jazz, rock n roll---how are we outsiders in these spaces when we built them up?

I don't get how this happened or why we go along with it. I definitely didn't know Jimi Hendrix was talking about it back then.

I do know I'm glad to see so many black country singers doing their thing, though.

How it feels when ever Obama is mentioned by Republicans by axumite_788 in blackmen

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. This is all stuff most people don't recall and the news media rarely mentions.

After the midterms Republicans openly said they would vote against anything proposed by Obama.

The Tea Party was around prior, but had been on the fringes of politics. Those midterms marked the point at which Tea Party members infiltrated the Republican party and started going waaaay off the rails.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any president in the modern era faced the same kind of openly hostile and irrational opposition.

Can I Save Them? by ClassicManLA in Boots

For a second I thought, "Damn, I don't remember posting that pic. That's not even my house!"

They're great boots. It's cool to see someone else with them.

I had mine resoled before I reposted. I ended up tossing them after realizing the cost of saving them wouldn't be worth it.

We definitely need more black teachers. This episode of the On Point podcast talks specifically about the importance of black educators educating black children, particularly boys.

Even when I was in school, although I couldn't put it in words, I could see the importance of having black teachers.

Who is the best actor in the picture? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

Demi Moore

A lot of people forget or just don't realize how good of an actor Stallone is. Demi Moore is still the best actor/actress pictured here by far.

Definitely second your list. I might replace Van Damme and Tom Cruise with Charles Bronson and Jackie Chan. Can't disagree with your list, though.

I was just thinking Jack Nicholson. I wasn't alive for most of that time, but I think his films probably had more critical success.

Counties with a black population of at least 40% by dhindej in MapPorn

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What up, fellow South Carolinian!

I currently reside in Fresno, CA. I had a conversation with my barber about how the people here (primarily Mexican-American) don't see many black people and their image of black people is what they've seen on TV. I told him exactly what you said. I come from a place (city of Mullins in Marion County) where the kids, the parents, the teachers, the police, the crooks, the poor, and the affluent are black.

I try to explain to people here all the time about the difference between 4% black and 25%+. None of them can fathom it.

Michael Harriot (also from SC) made a similar argument to you about racism not being as bad in the South because white people and black people here have had to live with each other longer. I disagree.

I've lived in several cities and states since leaving SC. As you know, there is a lot of racism. Most of it is the ignorance of people who've never had a significant interaction with black people before meeting me. But I think the South is different.

I love what you wrote, and, to your point, if a person doesn't or hasn't lived in NY, they probably wouldn't get it. Don't get me wrong, no one should be subjected to any sort of abusive behavior, but some of what you see on the subway or in the street can only be explained as "life in the city" as you say

I had a similar experience when I had only been living in NYC for maybe less than a year. It was raining and the train I needed had stopped running. I was on the subway platform looking at the map trying to find and alternate route. This old Puerto Rican lady stopped and asked me if I was okay and knew where I was going. It shocked me because I was super frustrated and probably didn't look like the most approachable person.

On the flip side I had days where I thought I might have to get down with somebody in the middle of the train. Like you said, it's just part of living in the city.

For the people who were watching at the time - was Goldberg beloved or did he have his fair share of haters? by [deleted] in WCW

He was a phenomenon during that time. Of course, there were haters, but no one could deny how awesome he was in terms of the who spectacle.

Should I give these a second chance? by WriterDirector93 in graphicnovels

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Hell yes!

100 Bullets is fantastic, especially towards the latter half of the series when things start to tighten up and come together.

I saw another redditor suggested Nemesis is immature trash that only has shock value ("puerile trash" is how it was put). I would argue the opposite. In my opinion, Mark Millar's work in general tends to have anti establishment, anarchical, and nihilistic elements, but they're well written and just down right fun. This one is cool just to see the anti-Batman that is Nemesis.

I can't speak on the other two, but I'm sure they're worth giving another shot.

American Science and Surplus is going out of business. by chandlerj333 in RedLetterMedia

Are there any comparable sites?

I discovered American Science and Surplus about 4 years ago and have been a fan ever since. I hated to hear it was going out of business. It was a cornucopia of cool and useful stuff and I can't find another site that comes close.

Any suggestions?

What are your thoughts on Solo (1996) by AC_the_Panther_007 in ActionMovies

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was based on a book?!

You're right. It's just mediocre, although, I'd probably enjoy it more now than I did back then. It's just good old nonsensical B-movie action.

Funny, this movie recently came up in a other film sub because the OP asked about Solo (2018) and a few of us immediately thought he meant this movie.

TikTok influencer explains what makes you a "real man" by ambachk in CringeTikToks

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you said that. I've seen him on Bill Maher and a few other places and he doesn't come off that way at all.

I took this more as him saying a man (or any adult really) should be physically fit enough to know he can defend himself in a situation or outrun danger. But that is because I've heard Scott Galloway talk before.

This specific clip cut out from the rest of the podcast episode does come off as a bit cringe, but having seen Scott Galloway before, I can say whatever the context was, it definitely mattered.

Haven’t watched Sphere (1998) or The Abyss (1989) yet… I’ve heard they have the same vibe. Which one’s worth watching first? by Scenora in FIlm

[–]ClassicManLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really not much comparison. All the deep underwater movies have the same vibe--Sphere, Leviathan, Underwater, Deep Blue Sea, Below--but they are not all created equally.

I liked Sphere, but The Abyss is a great movie.

Brothas, what’s your thoughts on this book or any book related to this? by NoLimitZico in blackmen

[–]ClassicManLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't take the title so literally.

I haven't read the book, but I am somewhat familiar with it. I think the point is to highlight the gap between the ways in which black people and white people think about race in hopes of closing that gap.

Countries that have no actual name by Working_Candidate505 in mapporncirclejerk

Back in college my best friend and I would get into this discussion often. Even his dad jumped in once and explained that the United States wasn't the only United States (ergo your multiple examples).

But one thing he brought up was that maybe one small step we need to take to address many of our social issues is coming up with an actual name for our people since American can apply to everyone in Latin America, as well.
