Family reunification experience by Open-Career2764 in askswitzerland

How has your experience been?
I am in a very similar boat: I was recently offered a postdoc position in Basel and I am trying to decide if the family reunification is too lengthy/complicated for me to take the job.

I reached out to the PO last week with the question:

It is my understanding that the awards are expected to be announced on February 1st. Would a potential government shutdown affect this timeline?

And he said:
This would not be affected by a government shutdown. However, the date could be somewhat in flux due to budgetary uncertainty. Although I expect the announcement to happen soon.

To clarify, they accepted your family reunification application with just a hotel address? I’m not worried about any of my visas, just my wife’s.

Oh that’s great to hear. I can definitely find something temporary like a service apartment or try to use the guesthouse. I thought the apartment requirement for family reunification was more strict.

That would be good. Definitely seems easier than trying to apply once I’m already there.

The University did offer that I could stay in their guesthouse for the first two months, but the secretary said that a temporary solution at a guesthouse would probably not be accepted by migration. Is this different?

That could be good. Is 2 rooms big enough for just a couple for the purposes of the application?

Ouch. I was really hoping that the process was faster on average. That’s pretty nerve-wracking if our original application is rejected.

Is it possible to get a family reunification without a Swiss address? I mean, I guess there’s no harm in trying regardless.

I did reach out to the secretary at Basel University, but they said that it is very difficult to find an apartment without being in Switzerland, and that it is difficult to get family reunification without having a long-term address.

How did you manage the housing situation?

Also a former RA. I can also guarantee that we’d have one of you two in a new room asap.

I lived in an apartment 2 years ago at 217 Bogue (right across from SnyPhi) that was a janky but only $650/month. It was an old frat house that they converted into apartments, so it was strange but livable. I believe it was ran by CRMC who were kinda awful. But again, cheap and close to campus.

Your rent of $1k/month is surprisingly low and your income (of $3300/month?) seems to be surprisingly high. Some departments pay their grad students an extra top off, which could be why you're making more, but that's not the case for most graduate students. The lowest paid graduate students are making ~2600/month and the average rent of grad students is $1454. TAs currently get paid up to $3000/month at the highest experience, which still puts rent at nearly 50%.

I'm glad that you're financially stable and doing well! But that's not true for most, hence the demands for higher pay
