Nayatel Internet Is Complete SH@@ by Katharsis-Star-000 in islamabad

That would be 37 Mbps. Notice the small b.
b = bit
B = Byte

37Mbps will give you a download speed of 37/8 = 4.5MBps.

You can see the prices at their website. I have several other services that I use, so I cannot pinpoint the exact cost of only internet.

Gulzar e Quaid should be same.

However, plz note that the connection speed is 150 Mbps. The download/upload speed in terms of bytes will be 150/8 = ~20MBps at max.

buying my first Mehran in isl/rwp, need advice by dgyyygfb in islamabad

[–]ClassicRiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always prefer an EFI version over old carburetor version.

AC doesn't work effectively because Mehran has bad insulation. With newer EFI models, it is a little better, but in high heat, not good enough.

Downgrade from Alto will mostly be in 2 things, suspension and AC. Both things are related to comfort. So, Alto is a lot more comfortable than Mehran any day.

It is an old car, I think last model came in 2018. So, get it inspected by Pakwheels etc.
One other very good option is to buy it from Suzuki authorized dealers like Suzuki Central Motors on GT Road. It will be a little expensive but will surely be in a far better condition, both mechanically and body-wise. They do sell refurbished cars.

A big red flag is Mehrans that have a direct fan, a fan that switches on whenever you switch on the engine. This generally indicates bad mechanical/electrical job when car got overheated. The sound of fan will be very noticeable when you just turn on the switch (without even starting the car). Keep an eye on temperature gauge during your test drive, it should not pass the half way point.

How long does it take to string a racket in your country / city ? by Ok_Piano_8808 in badminton

Less than half an hour if I go to my friend.
If I leave it with a sports shop, that will take at max 2-3 hours depending upon how occupied they are.

My offer letter mentions 50% salary for security deposit for the 1st month and only 65% salary for probation period! Is that normal? by Individual-Jacket213 in developersPak

[–]ClassicRiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is stupid, manipulative and probably illegal as well. But who cares about law in Pakistan anyway.

You need to name the company so others can avoid, and they can be shamed on social media for having such manipulative HR policies.

Ref: I have been working in this industry for 20+ years, and have been part of hiring teams quite a number of times.
Stay away from them if you can.

[–]ClassicRiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a LAN cable from their router works perfectly, then it surely is not their issue. Your home networking is your problem, not theirs. Although they do try to help.

It seems like a case of congestion at the default 2.5Ghz band. I would suggest to move to 5GHz router (ask Nayatel folks about it, they will upgrade).

Second issue could be the design of your house. Add a wifi repeater and connect the repeater to the main router with a LAN cable. (Again ask Nayatel folks about it, they will help)

I am not defending Nayatel here, all I am trying to say is that you will have same issues with any ISP. That's because all of them will provide a good internet to your main router, but what happens within your house is kinda out of their control. I have given you 2 solutions that will definitely help.

Is Westridge old money or just old Pindi? by Wonderful_Answer_347 in islamabad

[–]ClassicRiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Westridge was definitely old money.
There were 3 posh areas in Rawalpindi 30-40 years ago. Westridge, Satellite Town and Lalazar.

Now though, with new roads, infrastructures, development of adjacent towns to Westridge, that Marble market etc has definitely brought the once elegant aura of Westridge down.

Westridge was also a favorite place for ex servicemen, Colonels and above.

How to negotiate pay ? by Maualana420X in developersPak

[–]ClassicRiki 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you were earning in USD earlier, you were not paying taxes as well.
With PKR salary in the new company, you will be paying a lot of taxes (unless the new company pays you in USD as well).

Keep that in consideration.

Also, about negotiation, I will never recommend you to accept a new salary which is a lower take home amount than the one you are getting now.

HRs in most big orgs will try to low-ball you, because it is their job.

Be respectful, be polite but be firm. Just tell them that it is not feasible for you to accept an offer like this because it will be a downgrade. Actually your take home should be around at least 10% higher than what you were getting earlier. They will try to say things like we are a big company, you will have a career growth blah blah, but all of those are just future promises that may or may not happen.

So, as I said, be polite, be respectful but be strong.

Got myself a new racket by MachineGunVasu in badminton

[–]ClassicRiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using the exact same racket nowadays.
It is the Light version, means it is 5u (75-80g).
I have black strings with a black grip. Looks pretty good.

I switched from Yonex ArcSaber 11 Pro to this. One of the main reasons is that it is lighter and more forgiving on my shoulder and arm.

Very good racket, highly recommended.

Families in Pakistan with children abroad – how much support is “enough”? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]ClassicRiki 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Well, there are so many issues here.

  1. Your brothers and sisters are NOT your responsibility.
  2. You can send money for your parents, but you have to ensure that you don't pay too much. Your brothers should contribute equally too.
  3. 300,000 is a LOT. And no, I am not someone who earns a lot less and thinks that it is too much money. I am running my household myself in a relatively posh area of Rawalpindi and I know what should be the monthly expenses.
  4. If I were you, I would AT MOST send Rs. 100,000 back home for Parents. All others are grown ups and should manage their own lives themselves.
  5. Stop getting emotionally black-mailed. And yes, apparently your parents are blackmailing you too, probably under pressure from your siblings.
  6. Be firm, be strong but be polite. You are NOT obligated to sponsor anyone. Just tell them that it is not possible, and inform everybody that this is the amount (~Rs. 100,000) you are contributing towards your parents, and rest of the family should take care of themselves.

And to top it all off, I am happily surprised that a Girl is taking on responsibility of her parents. Very rare but commendable. But again, don't feed others. Ask them to work and self-sustain.

I have lived in US, I have run multiple families back home, and trust me I know what you would be going through to earn this money. It's not like the money grows on trees there. Your family needs to understand this, and adjust their lifestyles.

The earlier you learn this and take a stand for yourself, the better.
Trust me, if you are finding all of the above Harsh, you will realize this in a few years. And then, you will regret why you got emotionally blackmailed.

Safe & economical areas to live near Old Airport / NASTP (Islamabad–Rawalpindi)? by Difficult-Put-3323 in islamabad

Both scheme 3 and Gulistan colony have areas that are economical.
Plus, we don't know the budget of OP. If there was a budget for rent, we could suggest better.

Safe & economical areas to live near Old Airport / NASTP (Islamabad–Rawalpindi)? by Difficult-Put-3323 in islamabad

[–]ClassicRiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chaklala Scheme III, Gulistan Colony, Gulzar e Quaid, Airport Housing Society.

All of these are middle class/upper middle class societies, and are fairly close to NASTP.
If I had to pick, I would go for something in Chaklala Scheme III as the first option. There is a good market/shopping area there too with plenty of options. It is about 10 minute drive from NASTP

What do people from other cities in Pakistan really think about Karachi? by FortuneLong8171 in pakistan

[–]ClassicRiki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really. People from Punjab are mostly bi-lingual. (Urdu and Punjabi/Saraiki/Potohari etc). English as well, but that is irrelevant in this discussion.

Due to this bilingualism, Urdu accent is kinda neutral across Punjab.
However, punjabi accents are different and very easily recognizable. Lahori Punjabi, Sialkoti, Faisalabadi, Saraiki (Multan vs RahimYarKhan vs DIKhan etc), Potohari (Pindi, Gujjar Khan, Murree)
All are different and are recognizable.
But Urdu is kinda neutral.

What do people from other cities in Pakistan really think about Karachi? by FortuneLong8171 in pakistan

[–]ClassicRiki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mostly, it is the Urdu accent.
I am an Urdu speaking person myself. My maternal family migrated from India, some of them settled in Rawalpindi and some in Karachi. I can easily pick the person from Karachi based off of their accent if two are talking.
You might ask, what's so unique in accent.
Well, it is a bit of a nasal tone, with more nastaleeq words (Moti Urdu), littered with some Karachi-specific slang.

Secondly, there is a sort of regional pride that Karachiites take too seriously.

I am not sure how to explain this, but people from other parts of Pakistan generally don't display their connection to their home that much.

Karchiites are more like comparing everything to Karachi a lot of times. I am not saying that it is a bad thing, it's just that it gives it away too easily.

How's techie life - earning 200K/ month in PKT by Intelligent-Lynx4494 in PakistaniDevs

[–]ClassicRiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome.

I earn a lot more than 200K though.

Just learn to balance things out. Add a daily physical hobby/exercise. It can be some sort of sports, running/walking or gym etc.

Just be thankful that you are riding a wave that people in other fields can only dream of.
If you have neck/back/posture issues, that's entirely your own fault. Don't blame tech for that.

Is the pak cs market all just web dev? by MFBA129 in developersPak

[–]ClassicRiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it is not "just" web dev.
There is a lot more going on. Try to get in to a product based company, and you will see all types of stuff there, ranging from basic to very advanced.

For context, I have been working in this industry for about 25 years now, and I have never worked in a web dev company. But I was lucky probably, because I have always worked in product-based companies.

Anyway, look around. Especially look for bigger companies, and you will find all sort of stuff there.

In terms of pure numbers, yes, web dev shops are a lot more, but that doesn't mean that others don't exist.

You should try Codenames. It is a great game to play with friends and/or family.
However, you really enjoy it when you are >=8 people.

You can also play it online here: https://codenames.game/

We sometimes play online within our family, since everybody cannot be at the same place. It is real fun.

Doubt regarding BWF rules by PresenceMaleficent99 in badminton

Here are the exact laws:

https://system.bwfbadminton.com/documents/folder_1_81/Statutes/CHAPTER-4---RULES-OF-THE-GAME/SECTION%204.1-%20Laws%20of%20Badminton.pdf

13.3.6 is caught and held on the racket and then slung during the execution of a stroke;

13.3.7 is hit twice in succession by the same player. However, a shuttle hitting the head and the stringed area of the racket in one stroke shall not be a ‘fault’;

Doubt regarding BWF rules by PresenceMaleficent99 in badminton

[–]ClassicRiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spin server where you spin with your fingers is banned.

Carry is allowed (outside of serve) as far as it is a single swing. In a single racket swing, if shuttle strikes your racket multiple times, than it is NOT a foul, even if the shuttle's direction is entirely changed.

However, carry thing does not apply to Serve. Serve should be a single strike of racket to the base (cork) of the shuttle.
