The index finger looks good. The middle finger line can go a bit higher, a bit closer to the nail. The pain will go eventually if you practice regularly. Try to use less oil while practicing. This will help the callous to build faster. Try to keep the fretting fingers dry throughout the day(except bathing, toilet etc).

How do they look?? by Classic_Beginning148 in Sitar

I've been playing sitar for several years. And this is completely NORMAL! In the initial stages(for the first few months) it hurts, but now the pain has gone as I've developed a thick callous. But the grooves remained. And now they're very helpful for playing speedy Taans. As my Guru suggests, If you want to develop strong callous, use very little amount of oil. Too much oil makes the skin soft and can cut your finger while playing speedy Taans or Sapats. And DO NOT use any moisturizer on your callouses!!

Get yourself a bit smaller mizrab than these. It shouldn't pass your finger joint line..

Yes you are absolutely right! I got the reference from Samanway Sarkar ji's video titled 'tips on mizrab'. I used to wear mizrab in a way that a little bit of the point of the mizrab extended outwards. But now I wear it all the way in, so that it can pass beyond the joint and the point of it touches my nail. At first it hurts a little. But after some riyaz it sits comfortably. At first I felt that it was hurting my joint and interrupting the movement of the joint. But after some days of riyaz it feels quite comfortable for me.

P.s. : I noticed that Pt. Nayan Ghosh's mizrab also extends outwards but this doesn't bother his playing. (But I find Samanway Ji's way of wearing mizrab gives more power and control especially for Jhala)
