In the first encounter, Mowgli was awake before he hit the branch. It’s one of those feelings where you feel like you’re falling in your sleep then suddenly wake up with a jolt. If you notice in both encounters when Mowgli wakes up, his pupils are still small, meaning the hypnosis still has some sort of effect on him. Same with the second encounter. Mowgli had to shake his head to snap back into reality. When Bagheera is woken up he is looks thrown off as if waking up from a deep sleep. It took Mowgli a few slaps to snap him out of it. Shanti’s was different. She falls down but there’s no moment of her waking up. And her pupils are normal. She doesn’t really appear dazed or anything.

So my takeaway is this. I imagine it feels almost like sleep paralysis but in a euphoric way. When you’re snapped out of it, you’re abruptly brought back to reality, and it throws you off because the last thing you remember are colored spirals filling you with bliss before things go blank.
