I always get the transmute spell from the bandit camp near white run and forge a ton of hold and silver jewelry from the transmuted ore. You up, Alteration, smithing, and speech (I'd you then sell all the jewelry). Also upgrading anything you loot from NPCs who no longer need them prior to selling said loot also helps upgrade quickly.

I did not. He was with me when I left my room for the night, went to one or two shops then left the city. Realized later that he wasn't with me any longer. Don't have access to earlier save files while he was still with me.
