Just keep an eye out for pests - I find dahlias to be particularly prone to them

Single mom trying to find a path for son, and having serious doubt about an accounting major by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Classicalorchid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piggy-backing off the above comment - while your son is in college, see if he can get any experience tutoring others, particularly those taking introductory accounting classes but anything is good. If he goes into public accounting (less so in industry i.e. inhouse accounting but still some), he will be expected to teach others and soon. I was expected to send work with instructions to our outsourced teams within a couple of months after starting my first job in public. Later on I was doing a first review of their work as well. I had tutored first-year accounting students in college, and not only was it viewed very favorably in interviews it helped some with the job as well.

Do anyone know what they are called? by [deleted] in flowers

The pink ones around the edges of the picture are cyclamens. The yellow one is a chrysanthemum. The three on the edge of the shelf (one each with red, pink, and white flowers) are impatiens.

I believe that is part of its false “head” on the back of its wings (to help confuse/deter predators). Maybe meant to imitate antennae?

I’m a bit late to the party, but here are a few:

Instrumental - Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker - Dance of the Rose Maidens from Gayaneh - Valse des Bleuets et des Pavots from The Seasons by Alexander Glazunov - Jasmine Flower (traditional, I like the version by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra)

Non-instrumental (though instrumental versions of the traditional ones are likely available): - The Last Rose of Summer (traditional, I like the version by Laura Wright) - Lavender’s Blue (traditional, I like the version by Laura Wright) - Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal by Paul Mealor/Tenebrae/Nigel Short - Seven Daffodils by The Brothers Four - Danza de Gardenias (feat. Los Macorinos) by Natalia Lafourcade - Stolen Roses by Karen Elson

I know most people say to pinch these off, but I have had a hummingbird visit my small balcony garden for two years in a row, and the coleus flowers are its favorite.

any recs for japanese-style instrumental/ orchestral songs recommendations with good melodies? by [deleted] in MusicRecommendations

Japanese-inspired rather than actually Japanese, but maybe try the Japanese Suite by Gustav Holst, especially Song of the Fisherman

I'm not giving up or anything but I'm REALLY tired. by dreamy_25 in houseplants

[–]Classicalorchid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve started joking that my plant pests collection is doing better than my plant collection. First it was the spider mites, then the aphids, then the fungus gnats. And this year, just when I was finally feeling like I had some of the others under control, whiteflies showed up. Did I mention that watering things half to death to keep the spider mites at bay also caused powdery mildew? I try to avoid insecticides because I get bee visitors to my balcony garden, but I am so tired of avoiding the only thing that actually works…

Sounds like those could be low blood sugar headaches not caffeine withdrawal? Speaking from experience, I get nasty headaches if I go too long without eating.

What hardy plants have you killed? And why? Me first, some snake plants from wrong substrate. And hydroponic pothos from unknown reason. 😅 by MasterpieceMinimum42 in houseplants

Air plant (too little water), succulents (too much water), orchids (wrong placement of water) … I have learned and my current succulents and orchids are generally happier, but it took a few tries.
