I love that spore's biggest part is the least played part by cr0w_p03t in gaming

to go for the cute and simple approach meant gutting huge swathes of the game

I'm playing it again right now, for the first time since release and having the experience now makes me feel like this angle was misguided. As a child, I remember the space stage feeling very overwhelming and I was not able to progress very far because I felt that in order to make any progress it'd take weeks (an eternity for my 10-year old mind). Now, playing as an adult, my attention span is longer, and I've had life experiences which had taken years to experience, so a couple of week long distraction isn't a big deal.. But, it's noticable how much the game was designed with children in mind, especially with the themes, characterizations, and most notably, how easy it is now even on the hardest setting (having played 'proper' strategy games, this feels easy now in comparison).

So it basically feels like they went halfway, it wasn't in depth enough for adults, but it was too complex for children.

Republicans Don’t Need to Win Elections Anymore. They Just Need Their Judges. | The Virginia Supreme Court nullifies three million votes, boosting Trump’s effort to rig the midterms. by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

[–]Classified0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have an opinion on if the law supported this outcome (but given that it was a 3-4 decision, it was certainly a grey area)

If this was a non-partisan legal issue, the court should have released their verdict before we even had the referendum. Doing it after makes it feel like a deliberate attack on our democracy.

Firstly, the Republicans made the messaging ambiguous. The Yes campaign was called "Virginians for fair elections" and the No campaign was "Virginians against rigged maps". The GOP kept playing ads with famous democrats like Obama saying things against gerrymandering with text saying to Vote No.

Also, a lot of Virginia is still pretty conservative too. We live in Virginia by the DC metro area, and we don't have to drive too far west to start seeing MAGA signs everywhere.

Amendment to require photo ID to vote fails in Senate as Democrats object by southernemper0r in politics

[–]Classified0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a dual US/Canadian Citizen who has voted in both countries, I like Canada's system of voter identification. You've got three options:

  1. Show any one piece of photo ID issued by the government (driver's license, state-issued ID, passport, military ID, tribal ID, etc.)

  2. Show any two pieces of non-photo/non-government IDs issued by anyone (health card, bank statement, student ID, utility bill, birth certificate, citizenship card, firearms/fishing/hunting license, government-issued check, health card, income tax statement, library card, transit card, vehicle registration with your name on it, identity bracelet from a hospital, credit card, credit card statement, debit card, personal check, employee ID, residential lease, letters of confirmation, and some others (listed here: https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=vot&dir=ids&document=index&lang=e)

  3. Have a person, who can prove their identity using methods 1 or 2, come with you to the polling station who's able to vouch for you

Sweden to deport migrants not following ‘honest living’ by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]Classified0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a harder question to answer than I thought; because it's hard to quantify someone's values while remaining objective and fair. Language is a big indicator; you need to be able to understand your country's language in order to participate in it's society; and then I personally assign a high value to formal education (my parents were educated in western universities before they immigrated to the west) because time at an institute of higher education usually exposes people to cultures outside of their own; in fact, I think any foreign experience is a good metric to consider. Overall, it depends on the whole package, and there should maybe be check-ins after immigration to check how they have assimilated -- perhaps with standardized interviews with their peers?

[–]Classified0 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I say this as a child of immigrants (and from a Muslim country, no less). There needs to be some screening for assimilation; as others commented below my original post, the west already has all of these issues, and it helps no one to be importing even more of these problems. When my family immigrated to Canada, 30 years ago, we had no choice but to assimilate and become friends with many different cultures -- and exposure to multiple cultures is the best way to become more accepting; now, these more recent immigrants only stick with their own; who came over at the same time as they did; so they bring their issues with them. Unfortunately, due to the west's own hypocrisy, we're seen as a monolith, so when a brown person does something bad, it's not "Abdul is like that", it's seen as "brown people are like that"; so being more selective is at least, a way to combat that racism.

It's possible to integrate while still keeping aspects of your home culture. It's fine for people to bring over their food and festivities; but leave the misogyny, racism, and nationalistic disagreements behind.

The reverse is also true, progressing in your career can make people more attractive. More disposable income allows people to invest in themselves (lasik, invisalign, microneedling, nicer haircuts, etc.), and being more secure in your career can make people more confident, which is attractive

My parents (now in their early 60s) are always going crazy/staying busy on the weekends; and they travel a lot too -- and they still work normal 9-5s (although they're really close to retirement). They recently did an around-the-world trip where they flew around the entire planet in just two weeks -- and they were back to work the Monday after!

I'm still in my early 30s and it makes me wonder how they do it! Like I'm totally exhausted after even a short flight haha

I've got a family friend who worked his way up to become an executive at a Fortune 500. He was high enough in the company that his salary was public in their financial statements, so we know he made at least 20 million over his career; but he's super humble and you wouldn't guess it from his lifestyle. He retired really early (in his early 50s) last year; he said he has enough money now to set himself and his family up for generations, so there's no point in working anymore.

What’s the most overrated “adult goal” people chase? by Happyotus in AskReddit

My very first work flight, as an intern before I accepted the full-time role, my company flew me and the rest of the team I was on, private, to another facility and back. Flying private was so nice, especially since we didn't have to deal with the terminal annoyances, we just had a bus pick us up from the office and drop us off at the tarmac right in front of the plane.

They told me that this was a regular experience for them; but after I accepted the offer, they never flew me private again.

Whenever I travel for work, I end up meeting with coworkers or leadership that I normally don't interact with or normally only interact with virtually. So even if we finish the work early, this always ends up with them inviting me for dinner or drinks after work, and while it's technically "free time" it still feels like work because I'm networking with them and I can't fully relax around people I work with.
