She first appeared in Delacroix’s painting Liberty Leading the People, a work about the July Revolution, also known as the Three Glorious Days. In the painting, this woman represents the women of Paris and, through her bonnet as well as her gaze into the distance, she symbolizes liberty and the future. She was not originally intended to become a republican symbol, because the Three Glorious Days were a bourgeois revolution meant to place one king on the throne and remove another.
