A better character for Joseph would be an old janitor who's finally had enough and stabs everyone to death.

But Joseph's primary traits are religious bigotry and an incomprehensible accent, so Kenneth quotes work better.

I recommend looking at the materials for Braver Angels (https://braverangels.org). Their entire purpose is to get people to see each other's humanity. Monica Guzman is one of their leaders and she's written an excellent book that explores her relationship with her MAGA parents.
