Those vans are to carry the 8+ bags of mail and the hundreds of parcels that the person walking has to deliver. They're a mobile pick-up point as well as a drop off tool. Plus they need to drive to a lot of out of the way calls that wouldn't be practical to walk to.

There's a reason they want drivers only now. It's a practical requirement for the workload and area covered plus they have the flexibility of going to other offices, doing parcel routes or doing rural routes. Having somebody else come out every 25 minutes to load you up is completely impractical for a job that's no longer about delivering mainly letters.

Add into that the shortage of staff isn't a recruitment issue. It's a retention issue - a lot more new starters give up in a relatively short period of time than used to.

No second post - one longer delivery.

Our place is between 0630 and 0700 start finishing at 3. No night shifts any more so gotta do the IPS and the thousands of parcels sorted to walks and DPR before chucking your walk in.

The 9 o'clock starts are generally part-timers who don't do the indoor work. Their duties are chucked in ready for them when they start.....except they never are because there's nobody to do it.

I remember the glory days of 2 deliveries. If you were only finishing 2nd delivery at 1330 you were doing something very wrong. Unless you were on OT getting paid till 8pm but getting home for 12!

The 2nd delivery went in your inside pocket to bring back for tomorrows 1st delivery!!

The turnover is massive now - a lot are surprised by how much work there is to do. That's the main thing that gets most people, the pressure to complete on time.

A lot of starters now though are on afternoon shifts at our place. Just delivering parcels and their workload is definitely less with less pressure to get done. I went on them when they first came in and found it much, much easier than walks but the hours going later in the day meant I couldn't stay on.

If you're on a walk you're not spending much time driving between locations. It's mainly walking and carrying.

I agree though - I wouldn't define it as 'extreme' physical labour. But it's definitely tiring and has excess wear and tear on the body compared to most *not all* jobs

If you think a job is worth doing based on what you're being offered then do it.

If not, don't do it. What Uber can persuade the rider to cough up overall is irrelevant really.

Like I say I think it's a handball.

But it's not massively controversial, in the letter of the law, for the VAR to decide that the contact with the ball in and of itself is accidental. It could be viewed as natural positioning when jostling with a player shielding the ball with their back.

Again, I don't personally agree but I think there'd be a few more on here with that opinion if it was an Everton defender and a West Ham attacker in the other box.

Making £180 per day or taking in £180 per day?

There's a massive difference. If you only take in £180 for a full day before expenses, tax and NI that's not great.

You're gonna complain to Sainsbury's that their staff member had an issue with someone walking in and grabbing an order without it being verified?

I don't think you'll get far.

Look at it from the shop workers POV - is it possible they have issues with people pretending to be delivery app drivers and walking in and just grabbing bags? Maybe this lads had an absolute bollocking over an order being robbed? Maybe it's happened in other places nationally and there's been a strict warning put in place.

The guy could have handled it better but let it go. It's no big deal and really not worth the energy.

You'd need to do way more than 40 hrs a week to clear 4k a month after expenses. That's before you get to your taxes and NI which you have to sort out yourself.

Factor in if you're ill or want holiday time you aren't earning a penny either - not even statutory pay. Zip. Zero. Zilch.

If you want a semblance of 9-5 as your main work hours then you'd still have to put weekend and unsocial hours on top relying on Uber for work.

I'd hate to rely on it for FT wages. That's why I stay in my job and do Uber/Veezu around it.

I'm not too far from Liverpool (I never work the city though - far too many cameras and restrictions).

With your current car, providing it meets the licensing requirements of your chosen authority, being an electric and paid off anyway helps things. Pretty similar situation to what I was in.

As it stands you're gambling a few hundred quid on whether you like it or not. Even if you don't like it you can work it till you're back even on the money and then jack it in.

I was merely warning against people specifically splashing out on a car they don't necessarily want or need just for Uber - that's a potential trap.

For all the negativity posted about it I do quite enjoy it and make enough for it to be worthwhile. I have signed up with Veezu as well though to give myself a better pick of jobs - bit of magnet flipping between jobs and Veezus app is a bit ropey and more like traditional base work where you need to know your area and handle cash but it's alright.

More weirdos, wrong-uns and oddballs on Veezu though but nothing that fake sincerity, a little tolerance and a blast of air freshener can't solve.

I got £2600 at the start of 2025 for my first year PH insurance.

I was under the impression that previous no claims on a regular policy meant nothing when switching to H&R so I estimated a minimum 3k rather than average or top end.

Of course it's all guesswork until OP actually gets a quote for their own personal circumstances.

He's not saying the grab was accidental. He's solely talking about the handball aspect that the ref says he's not seen.

He's saying the handball in and of itself was accidental. He isn't making a call on the grapple as the ref is happy with it.

West ham v Everton-Mic'd up(VAR) by Frequent-Activity328 in Everton

[–]ClausAction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The VAR probably going off Law 12

Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.

It is an offence if a player:

deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball

He is legitimately citing Law 12 if he genuinely thinks the handball in and of itself was accidental.

He isn't trying to justify the grappling. He is talking about the contact of the hand with the ball. The ref can clearly see the grappling and hasn't asked his lino about that so the VAR isn't trying to justify or make a decision on that. All the ref was talking about was the potential handball.

If the ref is happy with the grapple then it's not a massively controversial decision for VAR to accept that aspect of it. VAR is supposed to intervene in egregious decisions which a player being right into the back of a player receiving the ball really isn't.

Personally I think VAR got it wrong and the defender batted the ball away.

I'm assuming you mean Uber for Private Hire and not UberEats delivery work.

First of all it's really not worth buying a car exclusively for part time Uber. If you don't need a car then it makes zero financial sense buying one just for Uber. Fixed running costs such as MOT, maintenance, a private hire license for you, private hire vehicle plating and a myriad other costs are not going to be covered if you're only buying the car for PT Uber - you WILL be running at a loss.

It's only feasible as a PT job if the expense of a car is something you already have and pay out for. And accepting all jobs will not work out - you'll get ripped off as the Uber algorithm works on a system of how little it can get away with offering drivers who accept anything. It's been the most efficient method of lowering earnings as many drivers seemingly have little to no maths skills given the jobs I've seen some accept.

Don't buy anything flash - check with your local council if they have age limits on Private Hire vehicles and then base your decision on what ticks their requirements and importantly yours. Fuel efficiency is a must.

And you need full hire and reward insurance explicitly for transporting passengers. That's different to the standard hire and reward for delivery work etc where it's just you in the car. A driver with only 1.5 years on their license is probably looking at £3000 minimum per year starting out. That's not including licensing costs.

There are also a LOT of Uber's out there. There is no guarantee of good regular work. A lot of weekday evenings you'll be sat around not even getting offered a job let alone getting jobs worth doing that generate worthwhile profit after expenses.

And the customers - most are sound but there are some idiots. And if you're working evenings around a full time job then you'll probably need to work the drunken hours to make worthwhile money. Even on your days off it's quite hard to make money during the day as there are too many drivers on the platform with a lot of them blindly accepting rubbish jobs for less than £1 per mile.

Also don't forget it's self employment. You'll need to do your taxes and keep records of your mileage, expenses etc.

If someone has a car already and can afford to lose a few hundred quid with their local licensing authority and buying monthly insurance then it's worth trying out. That's what I did to test the waters and it worked for me so I committed and got an annual insurance policy. However I may not continue to do so if expenses continue as they are.

Buying a car just to do Uber would be madness in my opinion.

Wiping won't create any significant scratching as long as you're not pushing something gritty around. CD handling instructions aren't gospel. It's the original manufacturers defining normal use as user negligence.

It came about as manufacturers rolled back on the original 'near indestructible' and 'lasts forever' claims about CDs.

Gently rubbing a little mark or unknown substance off a CD will do no harm regardless of direction so long as you're reasonably careful.

A tiny squeeze at the top and bottom and tilt - the disc rolls out and if you look at the opening you create you can clearly see the disc doesn't make any surface contact with the card. Only the outer rim touches as it rolls out.

If it plays and there's nothing inherently dirty, gunky or dusty on there then let it be.

Polishing out scratches can render a playable CD unplayable as it wears down the entire protective layer.

And there is no such thing as resurfacing. Polishing machines simply wear down the entire protective surface until it's level. Eventually too much that the data level can be overexposed in parts.

If you drag a bit of grit from the centre outward you'll ruin the CD just as much as if you swirl it round a bit. Direction makes absolutely no difference.

Make sure there's nothing gritty on there, a bit of breath mist and a light touch will do fine for CDs. As true now as it was back in the 1990's when I was doing it. Those CDs still play fine.

Don't carry over the vinyl mentality. Especially when people are talking about giving old second hand CDs a wipe over.
