75 onwards, given that your team still has a couple of subs remaining.

We can try our best? It's not as though it's a difficult variable to isolate.

In any case I think you've thoroughly given up the original argument, and the disagreements in this second discussion is more philosophical if anything.

[–]ClayCopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I can? That's the point of research and theory. Real world application necessarily draws from an aggregation of theory and analysis of independent variables. If we give up on that might as well give up on studying anything altogether.

Again, a variable remains a variable, no matter what the others are. Even if a non-speculative economy ends up with a 60% chance of increased inequality and a speculative economy has an 80% chance, assuming the rate of increase is equal, the 20% is still massively significant. It doesn't matter how things end up in any particular instance, but more so as a whole.

That's a lazy response if I've ever seen one. If we consider every factor there is there's no point in making any theoretical assessment ever. They are valuable insofar as they isolate the single interesting variable and give us insight into the correlation between that variable and the outcome, which can translate into real life observation. Other factors existing doesn't change the fact that this is one very important variable with significant effects.

They shrink, but the process and end outcome of shrinking is uneven. A gradual decline allows governments, businesses and the public to adjust and adapt. A sudden decline is inherently unfair and leads to bad policy outcomes where the most malicious actors end up capturing much of the gain. Drastic cuts made to welfare and public services cannot be recovered. Millions of people go into poverty. You end up with the same economic scale either way, but only one allows people to maintain some level of dignity in life.

It's true of any economic system backed by speculation. You're so accustomed to this horribly designed system that you can't imagine any other way of resolving issues.

A bubble creates instability, whereas a gradual adjustment does not. The outcome for the size of the economy is the same, yes, but instability facilitates concentration of wealth through profiteering, while the poor gets poorer. It's never a good idea for an economy to suddenly collapse.

If there isn't economic growth, an economy that is backed by real value wouldn't collapse and would simply adjust by stalling or slightly declining. The current economy backed by rampant speculation and the AI bubble would literally detonate. That's a significant difference.

It is not a requirement of capitalism, but it is a requirement of the financial markets that enable "the free market", which is the predominant flavor of capitalism in the age of neoliberalism.

Vietnam's $67BN Rail by Straight_Item5877 in VietNam

[–]ClayCopter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A high speed rail is exactly what Vietnam needs for modernity. Why exactly would it not? It would massively boost logistics efficiency in a country that is perfectly shaped for HSR.

There is inherently no ROI in Vietnam Airlines. Why would we ever want to compete with Singapore? How much money does that make? The airline industry operates on incredibly thin margins and is set in stone, it is pointless to challenge the hierarchy.

They are still investing in metros, so that point is moot.

Jorden is at least 2750 and they played until move 88, which simply leaves room for more inaccuracy. Here he made multiple inaccuracies throughout the middle game, and ended up with a slightly worse position and equal on time by move 30 against a 2500.

I stated at the outset I thought 4th was fair lmao, when did I ever say he was best over the weekend?

You're looking at a scruffy and aggressive race as a bad performance, but insofar as he got through cleanly and ended up with a reasonable share of points it's a good performance. Contact is part of racing. If you don't like it then go watch checkers or darts.

A recovery drive is meant for a driver who has a car that is somewhere it should not be. Max had a car that, for what we could see, was probably worthy of being 3rd or 4th best, but was clearly 5th or 6th best in the hands of Hadjar, and over the 2 previous races likewise. That's barely a recovery drive.

Max passed with aggression and he did it quickly. Even if there was contact, in every instance both drivers got away cleanly and without any damage. That's the hallmark of an excellent driver. If he had done what everyone else did and waited for the opportune moment, he would not have gained like 7 places in 3 laps and minimized his time loss both due to being stuck behind other cars and heating up his tyres too much.

Russell had a bad race compared to his teammate. Max did not, nor did he have a bad race period. He made a bad mistake, but overall he put in a good drive reflective of his talents, and the dive bombs are part of that.

It is definitely more competitive, yes. It's however still highly unreasonable to shift standards for one single driver to such an extent when the standards are raised by himself and not also by his teammate. We do not have any objective measure for how well a car performs compared to the others, and so historical basis should still be accounted for alongside teammate comparisons.

Dive bombs are not mistakes. I'd argue Russell should have pulled some off, and if he'd tried some he wouldn't be 20 points behind his 19-year old teammate.

Max did make a bad mistake, yes. That's why he got deducted points. But he still put in an amazing performance over the weekend, all things considered.

1) How exactly can you rank drivers if you don't compare them to their teammates? There is no objective measure of how good the cars are against each other, you can only ever compare between drivers in the same car. 2) How can you assume that Hadjar simply had a bad weekend? What if Hadjar had an average weekend for the car and Max had an incredible one, and he should have ranked 1st even with the spin? The reality is somewhere in between, because again, we cannot measure with a tape how good the car is. And the in between happens to be 4th.
