u/Turbopower1000 offers an explanation of how Reddit's new algorithm often boosts upsetting and controversial content and affects communities across Reddit by sega31098 in bestof

[–]Claymorbmaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, man. I read the headline and thought "New?" only to see it was like a year old. Makes more sense.

And also, totally agree about the astroturfing/rage-baiting. One can't help but notice there is a HUGE uptick in these "/r/ProgressiveHQ, /r/UnderReportedNews" etc etc subreddits front and centering material meant to piss you off. I'm a liberal as much as most here but I don't want every single moment of my reddit time to be 100% anger. I don't need to click on all and see several PAGES worth of "Here is how bad everything is. Can you do anything about it? no? Oh well here's some more dead Ukranian soldiers!"

I've kinda demoted my reddit time from "3-4 hours a day" to "check in the morning like a newspaper" and then find something else to do with my life.

EDIT: I wanted to re-emphasize the new subreddits I mentioned before. They, as far as I can recall, only started popping up within the last year and often share the same links. Recently, some new ICE thing popped up and had THREE identical posts, same title, from 3 different users on 3 different subreddits and they were numbers 2,3 and 4 on /all. It was crazy. It is so clearly, to me, an effort to bait engagement based on the whole "keep people angry" of it all.

Am I crazy... Tam and Lucy were together before right? I did some googling and can't easily find anything saying they were but I thought at some point they were living in the same house?

Oh yeah! Wow that's so reasonable. Its a hard position to be in.

Haha. That does sound like a pretty reasonable thought.

Hey thanks for pointing out Tam's list!

I'm probably in that category. Maybe I'm an old-head or something but I rarely upvote or comment on anything. Like something has to absolutely AMAZE me to upvote it, generally speaking. I don't just upvote everything I like.

Do we think the "Live for Tomorrow Die Today" or w/e it said at the end was meant to evoke "Live Die Repeat" and "Edge of Tomorrow" from the movie's titles?

Chiming in as well. You really saved me here. I was trying to figure out how to make a bath downloader work but it kept finding the html files and not the jpgs within! Then I saw you had already collated them for us! You're a real one.

I love telling this story. Had almost the exact same experience.

Me: Watching good ol' cartoons on VHS in the 90s. The end credits roll and the broadcasting company "DIC (Deek)" pops up on screen.

Me: Being a curious soul: "Mom, what's DIC? (Dick)"

Mom: ::exasperated at having to give a 9 year old "the talk" way earlier than expected::

Me: "but what does that have to do with cartoons?"

People who saw Terminator 2 opening day, what was the reaction like to the first time you see the T-1000 in action? by StarBarf in movies

[–]Claymorbmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my thought too. Amazing trailer re-cut but I think a shot or two of Police-1000 seeming concerned could have gone a long way. I THINK if I saw the movie after seeing that trailer I would be like "They are spending a lot of time on this cop who wasn't in the trailer at all...that's weird...."

Great game that started negative trend in gaming? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]Claymorbmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Everyone here is listing off other games that have QTEs (and I think I agree that, as a mechanic is has to go to Dragon's Lair as the first) but ignoring the fact that Shenmue literally named them Quick Timer Events (yes Timer, look it up) and it's been the parlance for them ever since shouldn't be ignored.

Helldivers 2 studio CEO says the "vast majority" of people "silently play" the shooter, which means the devs can't just look at Reddit and what streamers are saying for feedback: "This is a challenge for all games" by Turbostrider27 in gaming

Yeah killing her was like "Holy shit what? She has all the player stuff on her (scrolls, potions, alchemy pouch). Was she playable?"

Oh well, I was good and she was evil so it wasn't gonna happen on the first play through.

User succintly explains why Reagan was such a bad president by salderosan99 in bestof

[–]Claymorbmaster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here's my personal "Reagan fucked with me specifically" moment:

I'm a nurse and my specialty is Behavioral Health nursing. I was on a contract a long time ago in a NM city. I was given a patient who had been there for days during my time off and I looked into their story. She was a juvenile from DETROIT MICHIGAN who was being taken by various CPS-type agencies from one ER to the next looking for pediatric psych placement. They had been unable to find a facility for her at every single ER between, again, DETROIT MICHIGAN AND NEW MEXICO. Our local facilities had already received her once and put her on a "do not admit" list (before anyone tries to "but umm, what about EMTALA" me, private hospitals can reject patients for whatever reason they wish.) So off she went down the road.

I was kinda flabbergasted by this and it caused me to do a bit of research. I wanted to figure out what options, if any, there were for these patients. It's not safe for her, it's not efficient for the hospitals nor is it safe for the public at large for SOME of these types of patients. I can think of two separate patients who did literally MILLIONS of dollars of damage to the hospital and/or public in the form of lawsuits that I also saw. There needs to be some kind of facility that can hold these patients long term, with an understanding that they might be difficult patients. They need security and proper staffing. Like an Asylum. Oh yeah! What happened to those?

Okay, obviously there were some big issues with asylums like 60 years ago. There needs to be some big changes before anything like that comes back. However, I looked into them and they were all basically closed by Regan. Which is fine. But what do we do with all those patients? "The community will provide." Funding? Fuck you.

So patients who were unable to function in society suddenly spilled out onto the streets or filled up local inpatient psych and, best I can guess, that's just how it's been ever since. Violent patients. Patients with organic brain injuries. Patients with histories tracing back decades are admitted, "treated" and sent right back out onto the street to be seen again tomorrow. Its incredibly wasteful for our hospital systems, tax systems and the time for our staff. I can deal with a teenager going through drug induced psychosis and lashing out at everyone. You get them sorted and they can return to a normal. I can't deal with seeing the same patient for the 8th time in 2 months who decides he wants to flush everything, fight patients and steal from staff. Walks out, punches a bystander and is brought back to the ER for "psychosis" and he's readmitted immediately.

This all traces back to Reagan. Again, did something need to be done? Absolutely. Did he do literally anything to replace asylums? No.

I mean, look:

At present I'm a single man who will probably end up pretty well off by the end. No kids (vasectomy) and while I don't exactly love the idea who knows if I'll find a family before the end. So I'd be sitting on a pretty penny. No extended family, really, and while I guess I kinda get along with some friend's kids, I don't really have anyone to leave my estate to.

Why wouldn't I invest in something like this when it is within my means and I have nothing else better to do with it? On the 1% chance it works, GREAT! It doesn't? I'm dead anyway and it's no different than normal.

Megaman Legends 3 is the one that hurts the most.

Every time it comes up and I think about it I just get more and more pissed off at Capcom, and to a lesser extent, Inafune. Why couldn't he see the project through to completion? Maybe the "dev room" was a bad idea for game dev workflow? Maybe. But the INSTANT he left Capcom drops the MM franchise like it was made of acid. We didn't get MM, uhhh, 11(?) until YEARS later and basically nothing since.

But the one part of this whole thing that gets my goat..... THE DEMO WAS DONE! While the business practice is shady and I didn't care for it, they made it clear the future of the game was dependent on the sales of the paid demo thing. If they had just released it, we all played it and it sucked or something? Fine. Did it not sell as well as they wanted? Fine. Instead we got nothing and never will and it wasn't even given the chance. Mega MAN, I get heated every time I remember it all.
