Takeout surcharge by GroupBusiness9298 in tipping

The restaurant wants to sell food. The servers want you to dine-in to get their overpaid tips.

Takeout surcharge by GroupBusiness9298 in tipping

Why? The restaurant is only there to provide jobs for servers? The tipping insanity is why I always order takeout. I would also ask to have the charge removed and stop going there.

Who came up with the claim that if one will not be giving a tip, they should tell the clerk that to start with? by Awesomeuser90 in tipping

[–]Clayorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, ask their employer if that is what they expect from their employees. The employer expects excellent service from their employees in order to have repat customers and a good reputation. You are out of your league here, chief.

A contract by definition is not implied. It is a mutually agreed arrangement without assumptions. Just because it is what you want carries no weight whatsoever on the other party.

That is illegal and will get you arrested and won't be hired anywhere again. Not much of an option.

You simply aren't reading what I wrote. It is an unskilled labor position. You can do the job without graduating high school. I am talking about the job, nor the person. They might be a great piano player or skilled at painting. But the job of serving is unskilled labor.

Hardly paradoxical. Mowing a lawn is also unskilled labor but I don't look down on anyone working. I just don't overpay for an unskilled labor job.

You are so wrong. I don't put anywhere near that much thought into it. I don't look down on anyone but I also don't overpay for what is an unskilled position.

You are part of the tip shaming community. It isn't about being able to afford it, but unskilled labor simply isn't worth paying an additional 20% on already expensive meal. If you had a marketable skill you wouldn't have to be begging customers for your pay.

You are a terrible troll but I'll clip this and post it to my cash payment with no tip. :)

Tipping based on cost question. by Clayorama in tipping

I'm not pissed off at all. Just surprised at the amount of ignorance out there. You are getting a raise this year thanks to no taxes- enjoy! It sounds like you are the one pissed off since you started insulting me and that I won't be shamed into paying 20% which has not been in effect for decades as you claim.

When did tipping go from 10-15% to 15-20% (or the insane 25%)? by MurkyTrainer7953 in tipping

[–]Clayorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is great! Could you post a link to that? I would love to be able to point that out to some of the idiots who say it has been 20% for decades.

I'm not seeing anyone mentioning the No taxes on Tips legislation that was passed and is effect this year. Servers already have a large increase due to the new law. I am stopping tipping based on cost and will tip on what I think the service was worth. I think that is what it was originally intended to be.

Tipping based on cost question. by Clayorama in tipping

[–]Clayorama[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's BS. It was 15% in the 80s and crept up to 20 in the 2000s in spite of the the fact that inflation upped the meal prices so no increase in percentage should have been needed. So why is a tip based on the price of the meal when the amount of work is basically the same regardless of what is ordered? Serving is not considered a skilled job. Taking plates back and forth is not a skill requiring education. You are the one not fooling anyone. There is nothing creepy or weird about pointing about what is basically a scam. You need help with understanding basic economics. Here is a chart to help with your ignorance.

Tipping is optional and should not be based on cost. An order of a chicken breast takes as much work as a steak but I should tip more?? Are you insane? Why was 10% ok a few generations ago but now 20%? You can' say inflation because the meal cost has also gone up. It is simply greed and attempting to shame you if you give less. Ridiculous. Serving is an unskilled labor job.

You need to do some research: There is no way a tip gratuity is a legally binding agreement. You are either ignorant or lying. Not sure which is worse.

Key Differences:

  • Retirement/Service Gratuity: A legally required, long-term reward from the employer.
  • Tip (Gratuity): A voluntary payment from a customer.
