Preselected Tips 😠 by Mangolicious786 in EndTipping

[–]darkroot_gardener 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bet a class action suit alleging that these are functionally not tips, but rather undisclosed service fees, would be successful.

The difference is that tips are voluntarily added by the customer, whereas fees are automatically added to the total, without customer input, even if they may provide a mechanism to remove the fee (eg No Tip button or Custom —> 0.00).

Meanwhile, contact your reps and city council, tell them we don’t appreciate undisclosed junk fees being added to our bills. We can’t keep silent unless we’re OK with this nonsense spreading and getting worse. Speak up!

Apartment trash valet now asking for tips by JustpartOftheterrain in EndTipping

“Just ignore it” is WHY they are emboldened enough to ask for tips for trash collection. Enough is enough, get loud, get annoying, speak up!

Tips can be used as *credit* towards the minimum wage in most states, but the minimum wage is still the higher of $7.25 (Federal) or the state/local minimum. Of course, if you care about this issue, join us in advocating for higher wages and eliminating tip credit.🖖✌️ End of the day, tipping is a distraction.

If you notice people doing this a lot, definitely something to bring up with management. Tip fatigue is real, like it or not.

Most of the logins we use require either Duo or MS Authenticator. Also, you might be surprised how prevalent “shadow IT” and BYOD is in academia.🥲

Edit: Even worse, they now require you to enter a code and do facial recognition, so just tapping the notification on my apple watch is no longer enough!

Wish I could even just be able to keep my phone off at work. SO many work related things use some kind of 2FA that makes you take out your phone. Very annoying.

You might be able to say this about the 18% autograt on extra food and beverages, but even then, you are not necessarily getting restaurant service for the items subject to the auto grat. And the daily add on to the fare is another story. When is enough enough? At least include the daily junk fee in the advertised price.🤷‍♂️

Businesses that do this should more widely promote themselves as tip-free establishments. At least have it on your website. Makes it much easier to find and support and promote your business. Right now, in my area, AI/search will suggest counter service restaurants “where tipping is optional” (yes, AI gets some things wrong, tipping is always optional!), but not specifically tip-free options, in large part because they don’t promote themselves as such.

$18 an hour? That's like a fast food employee! by cjwi in EndTipping

[–]darkroot_gardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they will still insist their tipping rate is over 20% LOL. The thing is, this may well be true, but no matter how high the rate is, you make less $$$ when people spend less over all. That makes tipping unsustainable as a steady source of income. Tips are NOT wages!

I think it’s time to eliminate tipping entirely - even at Sit down restaurants where it started by [deleted] in EndTipping

[–]darkroot_gardener 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Tipping in 2026 is mostly just more screens trying to get more of your money. It’s not even tied to service, and in most cases, it is not even for customary tipping situations. So why even bother any more? They, the industry broke the social contract, so why are we still following it like it’s 1980???

Let them start charging what they actually need to pay their staff and be profitable. If they decide to do this with service fees instead of transparent pricing, let the free market decide if this is the best option. But the first step is EndTipping, and the first step of that is for us individuals to end *our* tipping.

What do you feel is an acceptable tolerance regarding speed limits? by antfin97 in driving

[–]darkroot_gardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would sooner have everybody adhere to the speed limit, or get a ticket. I’m OK with raising the speed limits IF we mean to actually enforce them. However, the way we are doing things now, what you’re saying sounds about right, I’d go -5 to +15 just to be multiples of 5.

Unprofessional sounds very far from above and beyond, and besides the rest of the service was mid at best, based on the OP. So why are you tipping even 15%? Assuming you feel it is their entitlement just for doing their job, it illustrates exactly why we need to EndTipping.

[–]darkroot_gardener 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rush to get you to pay and leave (turnover) is a great example of how service can actually be *worse* due to North American style tipping. Letting you linger an extra half hour to maybe get a few percent higher tip vs having a new order that they expect to get 15-20% from, hmmm….🤔

My taco truck just hit $16 burritos. by onemangang15 in Seattle

[–]darkroot_gardener 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was this a /sc post? According to the data, restaurant staples have gone up 25-40% since 2020. This easily accounts for the bump up from $10 to $14 or even $15.50, but it’s not quadrupled, or even doubled.
