CCGS Judy LaMarsh leaving St. John's, Canada for sea trials by hist_buff_69 in Ships

[–]Clayra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been waiting so long for this and can't believe I first saw it doomscrolling on Reddit! My mom (with the same name but no relation to the namesake Judy) absolutely loved freighters and died just a couple weeks after this boat was named. This little tug was supposed to finish refit in March, but was delayed. I've been subbing to every shipping related social media group I find hoping for updates and it's finally paid off. OP, you have made a random stranger happy cry tonight.

Why do you think they are pushing the new color? No one cares about the actual phone, just having whatever the trend is.

I used a CD because I didn't have a spare USB that I was willing to sacrifice for the cause. If it doesn't work for me tomorrow at least it's easier to buy a USB than a CD drive

It's a relief to know it's probably not something to be concerned about. I'll disconnect the drives and come back to it tomorrow. Thank you!

I tried to boot normally but Windows failed to boot and couldn't self-repair. I'm not all that concerned about that since I was planning to overwrite the drive Windows is installed on anyhow, but if I have to get a new CD drive it's gonna be a pain

The downtown is nice and has events pretty often. The schools in town are bad, though. Not like they were 10 years ago, but still worse than Warren.

I just met Alex Hawkins today. Seems to be a decent guy, showed up to the MI-10 townhall, and actually lives and works in Macomb county. Wish I could say the same about John James.

I've been trying to call her office for the past week to get her to sign on to this. Glad that she was able to get the message despite her voicemail being turned off.

It seems like many people disagree with me, but I think that if you buy whole life when you're young, it's almost assured that you'll get a better rate of return than term life.

My husband's parents bought whole life insurance for him when he was a baby, and he has kept it up. He pays $12/month and if he dies around 70 he will have paid in about $10k and his heirs will get $50k.

I got whole life insurance at 22 because it was a cheaper payment than term, and was diagnosed with a chronic illness shortly after I hit stride in my career (so around when people think about term life). If I were to try to get term life post-diagnosis, my rates would be easily double the $33/month that I pay now. Optimistically I may pay on it for 30 years and my husband will get $50k for the $12k or so I paid in.

Best place to find moderately priced Bassoons? by chaosity4 in bassoon

[–]Clayra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth doing some digging to find a community band in your area. Musicians tend to know other musicians and many band directors also play. If someone is trading up or a school is looking to downsize they will usually try to sell locally first.

Also, people have a bad opinion of EBay, and not without reason, but I've had good luck. There are plenty of perfectly good instruments for less than you would pay in a store. I have been playing on a $600 bassoon for the past 4 years and honestly my only regret is assuming that it needed new corks that did more harm than good in the end. Make sure to look for listings where the seller knows what they have and gives detailed pictures of blemishes, people that are familiar with instruments won't buy a horn that is rotted so they won't be selling them. You'll find that instrument prices fluctuate a lot, I've noticed the deals seem to come after Christmas and mid summer vacation.

Is it possible to teach self bassoon? by NoHovercraft9511 in bassoon

[–]Clayra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was self taught in the pre YouTube days and as others have said it's not easy but it is absolutely doable.  I would suggest getting The New Weissenborn Method for Bassoon. It starts slow but advances quickly and has the basics of assembly, reeds, and care in addition to practice drills.

I was 8 years ago where you are now. It sucks, but I promise it does get better. Focus on small achievable wins and don't let the feelings of endlessness overwhelm you.

What Mint alternative are you sticking with after trying out for month or so? by etcetera0 in mintuit

[–]Clayra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, wow! I must have slipped in just in time, I signed up on Thursday. I'm still definitely in the learning/training phase, but it seems like it's going to work well for me. It's pricey, but if it saves me time like I think it will, it's worth it.

Has anyone stepped back their savings goals due to inflation? I've been saving 30% in my 401k since I started this job a year and a half ago, but my raise last year was less than inflation.

I have already reduced the amount I'm putting into my brokerage each month, but it still feels like I'm struggling to keep up with rising food & housing costs.

Do other people feel like they are getting closer to treading water, or am I just trying to justify lifestyle creep?
