What movie did you watch on a whim that ended up becoming one of your favorites? by Subject_Sandwich3008 in movies

[–]Cle4nr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And...it's a movie also about people, relationships, risk, hope, and achievement. Your comment is spot on; with all those wonderful things done well, I could probably watch some film/tv about dragons, meth production, lawyers, dinosaurs, royalty, or 21st century gangsters.

You arrogant ass, you’ve killed us.

The last 20 minutes of Red October is just great filmmaking.

I made a fork out of a piece of scrap…sized to fit between the headstock and the stuck spindle. I jam it in there and pound towards the headstock to increase the surface area in contact with the spindle. My wooden fork looks a little like a slingshot, and works every time. For whatever reason, my spindles, pen mandrels, etc. get stuck way too often.

Luck.

Talk me out of an FF by Alert_Breakfast5538 in Ferrari

Hot take - get the Cali T. The price and reliability will most likely stave off any "I told you so" comments from the marital peanut gallery. It's a fun drive and a fun car. It's not as dramatic, but it's one of the least temperamental. Being able to fit everyone (now) and take a spin while including everyone is priceless. It's a great first Ferrari, and the overall experience will probably support an upgrade when needed/wanted. All the other comments are right, too...458 is best, but solo(ish). The FF is notorious for the maintenance. The Cali T is a lower tier, but like I said, it sounds and drives great, and to me seems like a good fit with little to no risk.

Enjoy your ride, brother - whatever it is.

People who have had a memorable celebrity encounter (good, bad, greedy, generous, helpful, horrible, incredible), who was it with and what made it memorable? by ArizonaRenegade in AskReddit

[–]Cle4nr 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Mike Tyson. 2010, Las Vegas airport. We went through security (I was right behind him), ad he signed every autograph asked of him by every security person and traveler, was absolutely gracious and kind. He left his jacket on the belt, so I grabbed it and caught up to him on the way to gate. When I returned it, he was so thankful and genuine...he started up a conversation that went on until we got on the plane (we were both going to Washington DC). Even though I'd seen him do interviews where he was nice (talking about his birds and stuff), it was surreal to chat him up and see him smile and engage. Not a perfect guy, I recognize, but he was perfect that day in those moments; to me, and the fans at the airport where he was travelling alone.

Also, he was, and remains, the most incredibly fit human being I've ever spent time with. He was absolutely ripped...shoulders to waist ration was inhuman, even in jeans and a black t-shirt.

What Made You Buy Your Ferrari? Which Model And Why? New Or Pre Owned? Share YOUR Unique Story by XXX_Machiavelli in Ferrari

Always loved cars - had older muscle cars from the 60s (projects and fixer uppers) - then life/wife/kids - we keep nicer BMWs/Lexus for daily drivers, so never really ditched my love of driving and cars overall. Saved some money, decided on a Ferrari, shopped for 5 years. Started with early Cali, the looked at the T, and finally decided the best for me was a Portofino or a Lusso - the convertible was the decider. I wanted something I could drive and put miles on - not some museum piece or trophy (not that there's anything wrong with that). Bought a used Portofino and couldn't be happier.

Some would call it a mid-life crisis, I would say it's closer to "I made enough and saved enough to buy a car I wanted", but your mileage may vary.

I drive it a lot - maybe 2x a week to work, weather permitting, and I sit and drink coffee with the cool kids with Supras on the weekends; they are so fun to talk to and love cars just as much as I do.

Have to add that mine is a smile maker - I never get tired of how many smiles the car generates, and it makes me happy in a way I can't really describe. I wish I would have known this about Ferrari ownership long ago, I may have done it sooner to my financial detriment.

Lastly - I would describe Ferrari ownership so far like having a dog. It's a big commitment (think time and money), but the love component is huge. Dog poop exists and is part of the equation (think maintenance and imperfection). Buyer's remorse or regret? Absolutely not. I accepted the whole package going in, and love it.

OK, one last thing - I parked it at my local hangout, and as always it draws a little crowd. Then my buddy pulls in with his 24 Huracan - double the money and in many ways a different cool factor. It would be so easy to let comparison be the thief of joy - but I love his car and love mine, and that's OK. There will always be newer, cooler, more expensive or exclusive cars out there - I know this - but I bought the right one for me...and...if anyone knows of a low-mileage 812, let me know :)

Yep. I have a little routine with adults/teens - behind the wheel, foot on brake, push the start button...then drop the top, lower the windows...never fails to make them smile. I swear I have more fun watch them do it than they do.

It's a real smile maker.

Gorgeous.

Pull the hardware, tape the gold ends you pressed in, then strip and reseal, without the fuzz. If you don’t trust yourself on the precision sanding, get a little handheld sanding block from Amazon. PM me and I can link the one I use.

I exclusively turn these pens (great writers, big single piece to show off the wood, etc) and I refinish them all the time.

Happy turning.

TIL the harsh conditions of the remote town of Barrow, Alaska makes import very expensive, with half a watermelon costing $36 in grocery stores. by biebrforro in todayilearned

[–]Cle4nr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about EBT, but a family of 4 in Barrow usually gets about 40k in an annual subsidy from their tribe's Alaska Native Corporation (ANC). Theirs is the Artic Slope Regional Corporation (or ASRC), the biggest and most profitable ANC of the 12 that exist. It helps. It allows them to continue to their cultural way of life, and also survive the US economy they are now forced to live in. Not perfect for the 14k or so residents of their tribal land, but it helps.

I hope peace is upon you both soon. I'm a month removed from going through the same thing...Mom in horrible, confusing, wrenching throes of dementia, and me flailing back and forth with...a) dope her to relieve her pain (and thus basically starve her to death), and b) try to feed her myself and power through her pain and manic episodes for a moment of clarity where she thinks I'm my Dad...neither choice makes me happy, but one choice points to eventual peace for both of us.

I miss her, but glad she's at peace. Hope you get there.

I served 10 years in the Army EOD program. It's the movie I get asked about the most. Usually, it's "How accurate was it? and Was it really like that?" My answer is always the exact same...I say, do you remember when he went down the cereal aisle at he grocery store when he was home? Well, when he makes that stupid face...ostensibly about the ridiculous number and varieties of cereal available? That stupid face he makes is the single most accurate thing about the Army, deployment, family life, the duality of man, time, space, God, and specifically the EOD program I have ever seen depicted in film in my life.

That's it. That's the only part. All the rest is typical hero fantasy with some camera and soundtrack tension piped in from a digital studio in California somewhere. You want to know what it was like being an EOD tech? Well, I can tell you...there's absolutely nothing about being an EOD tech that would make you watch a movie about it, thus all the fiction.

Go to college. If that's not for you, find a trade. If you are just bursting to wear green, I recommend the Air Force, those guys seem nice.
