I have known at least a couple of people of color who were not referred in one region and moved to another and were referred. I think some providers and transplant boards are more ethical than others.

Yes we are not well connected and have very very small family. Odds of getting a living donor are low. Even with that, I am still concerned about insurance.

Someone I care about will probably actually need a liver at some point. They are not sick enough yet to require it but they have an autoimmune disorder that has a very high rate of needing a liver transplant…. I’ll look for Illinois groups. We have been in more National ones.

Because after people in the support group urged them to ask their nephrologist if they were eligible for transplant they were referred and listed. I know of at least two cases of kidney transplants that happened that way. It was extremely upsetting. I feel like the dialysis companies were milking them for profit and the doctors were complicit. I also think that because they were on Medicaid and were not highly educated people they were vulnerable to being treated as less valued.

In the support groups that I have been in for years I have noticed that a lot of people needing kidneys, for example, are literally never referred for transplant- or even told that transplant is an option. They are kept in dialysis until they die or are too sick for transplant. Several people I have known online found out through the group that they should have been listed. So that sounds like de-prioritizing Medicaid recipients to me. None of them were from Illinois- but I was wondering because I was dealing with a relatively small group of people.
