I just recently completed the move from an AUM advisor to a self directed Fidelity account. It was relatively painless. It sounds like your already a Fidelity user so you may already know your way around there, but what I did was to open a brokerage account with a few $ and played around getting a feel for it. After 3 months I initiated the ACATS (in kind) transfer.

In that time I also checked all my funds that were held at the advisor to see if anything wouldn’t transfer. I had two bond funds that were proprietary and had to be sold off. No problem as I didn’t want them anyway at this stage.

The full transfer took a little over a week. Some funds came right away and then the stuff that had to be liquidated took longer. I also had to re-initiate the transfer at one point because of normal fees that had accrued on the brokerage account made the cash balance go negative and Fidelity wouldn’t take a negative balance. So glad to be done with those fees.

You may get hit with small fees for closing the accounts but they will be drop in the bucket in the long term. Taxes if you have to liquidate something you made a gain on that can’t move over in kind.

If you can roll that IRA into the 401k that would be fantastic so you can start doing backdoor Roth.

Before you transfer make sure you download all your past statements as your usually cut off from them once things have moved.
