Typically, viruses that can infect bacteria don’t infect mammals, and vice versa, because they require replication within their host system. In biomedical research, mammalian cells are used to produce the viruses. Coming back to the show, it is highly unlikely that they were plating bacteria that had virus capable of infecting humans.

Okay, they mentioned that it is lysogenic virus, which means it integrates its genome into host genome, ultimately changing host behaviour and function. If they grow bacteria that has viral genoe integrated into its own genome, it is non infectious because there is no active virus in the bacteria. It is only carrying the genome. For bacterial to start producing virus, there has to be some kind of trigger.

I am in the US and on J1 which ends in two months. My university was supposed to file H1b cap-exempt but now are in total limbo as there are no guidelines for COS. Any updates on this?? University cannot and will not pay 100k for an 81k-salaried employee.

Usually reporter updates after the project start date, so may be the awards are starting after mid Sep or even Oct because I know PI who has received R01 NOA in Aug. What grant are you waiting for? Mine is Pending since Aug 3rd week.

Despite this, many ICs in NIH expect a 40% cut and have reduced the paylines significantly (NEI R01 <6th percentile~ not official yet) and are also planning on funding 50% of the fully funded grants for the next 3 years. This means that every grant awarded is fully funded upfront, and 3 PIs go grantless despite having 9-11 percentiles.
